I wasn’t sure about the second pick of this draft. I’ve had a bit of experience with Dusk Urchins and it was pretty good but by definition it isn’t overwhelming. The Urchins are good at controlling the early game while Gloomlance is slow and clunky but I certainly wouldn’t fault anyone for taking either or even the Spriggan if that’s how you want to play it. The Corrupt locked me into Mono Black and the Incremental Blight made my deck awesome. I ended up a couple of cards short of being able to play mono black because I didn’t get enough help for the Blowfly – some Tortures didn’t come back. I took Torpor Dust over Torture even though I think Torture is significantly better because I figured this deck couldn’t really lose late but I wanted something that would deal with an evasion creature quickly.

In the first round I played against another Mono Black deck. I fell behind in the first game because he played turn 3 Restless Apparition and enchanted it with +3/+3 turn 4. I chump blocked with Murderous Redcap a couple times before Incremental Blighting it down to a 2/2 then holding it off with a Sickle Ripper. Neither of us could attack for a few turns but I eventually got ahead with some card advantage from Gloomlance and Dusk Urchins while he flooded a bit. He played some good creatures on turns 2-4 of game 2 then I cast Incremental Blight. Nice card etc.

Round 2 I played against a White deck splashing the WG and WU witches. Game 1 was close until I cast Incremental Blight. Game 2 he had both Witches going but wasn’t playing very aggressively. This let me sneak in the occasional points with Gravelgill Duo and Nightsky Mimic. He eventually got into Corrupt range and I finished him. He may have been able to win if he played much more aggressively.

I played against a mono Red deck in the finals. In the first game he played a Tattermunge Maniac and then stalled on lands. I Consign to Dreamed it then Murderous Redcapped it. When he eventually recovered and started casting real spells I had Gloomlance and Corrupt ready and he died to a team of Gravelgill Axeshark Redcap and Sickle Ripper. Game 2 he had lands and spells but he never got ahead and my cards were simply much better than his.

I had some subpar cards in this deck but I drew the Incremental Blight enough that none of the games were all that close.

Until tomorrow…

Rich
