My first few picks seemed to trap me. I didn’t want to be taking midrange Green cards but there wasn’t much else to take. The toughest pick of the draft was pick 4 of pack 2. I wasn’t really sure there but I figured I’m more likely to be Green White than Green Blue and if I’m splashing White I’d rather have the quasi-removal spell than a two-drop I won’t necessarily be able to play on turn 2. Obviously the next pack had Biting Tether and nothing making me feel foolish for not taking the Consign to Dream. I ended up splashing both with only a Farhaven Elf for manafix because I didn’t really need 15 Forests.
Round 1 I played against a decent Blue White deck. Game 1 he played Leech Bonder on turn 3 and dominated the game with it. I nearly came back with Shield of the Oversoul on Raven’s Run Dragoon but he found Aethertow for it. Game 2 was long and drawn out but eventually he flooded and I had Biting Tether and Recumbent Bliss to get my guys through. Game 3 he mulliganed and we drew a similar number of spells and lands and he eventually ran out of spells after starting the game two cards down.
Round 2 I played against a slow Black White deck. Game 1 I played Shield on my Cavaliers and he had no answer. Game 2 we both flooded but he had Windbrisk Raptor and Din of the Fireherd while I had Forests. Game 3 he stopped my early attacks with Mistmeadow Skulk and Ballynock Cohort. Eventually I built up a team of 8 dudes 3/3 or bigger and he didn’t have enough big dudes to compete and died after two alpha strikes.
Round 3 I played against a decent looking mono Black deck. Game 1 he got me pretty good with Raven’s Crime which stopped me from playing Oversoul of Dusk which he couldn’t possibly beat. I put Shield of the Oversoul on Nettle Sentinel so he couldn’t attack then got him for three with every Green card I drew. He never found a way to stop it and eventually succumbed. Game 2 I had a fast draw with Nettle Sentinel on turn 1 and guys all the way up to turn 6. He didn’t have Incremental Blight so he couldn’t stop any of them.
I was surprised to win the draft with this deck. It felt like I must have gotten pretty lucky somewhere although none of my opponents’ decks seemed exceptional either.
Until Monday…
