Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Probably the best rare in the format.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

I usually don’t go control but I probably want to do it with these two picks.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

1: Gomozoa

2: Into the Roil

3: Hearstabber Mosquito

4: Welkin Tern

My plan now is to build a deck aroudn those first two picks. Therefore I want cards which help me to survive until I reach 6 or 7 mana. Therefore Hearstabber Mosquito is not an option at all.

Neither is welkin Tern which is as great in aggro as it’s bad in control. Into the Roil is a card drawer and a good tempo card and would therefore be great in the deck but Gomozoa is simply better as good defensive three-drops are very few in the format.

Also it’s combo with Into the Roil and Whiplash Trap can make it a lot better.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Can’t be better than in this deck.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Both a decent blocker and a card drawer to dig into my bombs.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

I don’t like the card much but with both a triple Black and a “trouble Blue” casting cost I may like the card a little more.

My Pick:

UB seems to be open and the deck looks promising at the moment.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

One of those cards which is always better on the opponent’s board. I almost picked the Raptor for a matter of curve.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

It will become a pretty good card if I can get more creatures. If I’d no Drake yet I’d go with the 2/5 but as I want to keep my curve low I don’t want to run two of them.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Maybe worse than the 2/1 in this deck but I’d like to have winning conditions besides my rares and I don’t really have any at the moment.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

I don’t like Lacerator so much in a non-aggro deck and Sorin will require fixers as I’ve more Blue cards than Black ones at the moment. However it’s true that it trades with most cheap guys in the format and that it could be helpful. Maybe I’m being a little too harsh on the card.

My Pick:

A lot easier to cast than the Gatekeeper. Too bad it is a better card.

My Pick:

Finally a combo with Gomozoa!

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Two Hatchlings should do. Control or not Marauder is still a much better card.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I don’t like Merfolk Wayfinder at all. I just don’t see the point of a card which says: 3 mana 1/2 when it enters the battlefield get one Island fifty percent of the time.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Probably the deck in which it is decent.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Even though I have Gomozoa a second Trap wouldn’t be great as it doesn’t fit the deck too well. And as I’ve enough playables anyway I’d rather take the fixers.

I should probably have added a 19th land to that deck probably instead of the Gem or possibly instead of Blood Seeker.

In my first round I face a pretty strong RB deck. In the first game I have 3 Island Refuge Swamp on turn 5 and Sorin Markov in hand. The next three lands I draw are Islands and I end up dying to Zektar Shrine Expedition before I can cast my Planeswalker.

In the second game I play a game which isn’t mine by racing him but Windrider Eel allows me to win pretty esaily as Kraken Hatchling is slowing him down a lot. In the third game I decide to keep a five-land Sorin Summoner’s Bane hand. The gamble does not pay off as I die the turn after I cast the Planeswalker.

I think it was correct to keep as I have a card which should win the matchup if I draw some spells or if he doesn’t draw very well but I can’t really blame bad luck. That decision made this game a coin flip which is okay as I consider I have about a 35/40% chance to win on the play in this format.

Until Monday…
