If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

This pick is pretty easy even if most of the good cards are Black. If my neighbors go Black as well my pack 2 choices might be pretty bad.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

This is a very tough pick. Vein Drinker puts me either on Five-Color Jund or maybe Esper. Even without its activated ability it still is a 6 mana 4/4 flyer.

If I want to go Jund Manaplasm seems a little better than Druid of the Anima and if I go Five-Color none of the options are very good.

In Esper though there is a very good pick: Tidehollow Sculler. As I love the card I’ll go for it and see if I can go Esper.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

There are many good cards but Arcane Sanctum is great in both Five-Color and Esper the two archetypes I’m the most likely to play.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Another difficult pick as I have to make a choice between Esper and Five-Color here. The Kiss is the best card in Esper while Jungle Shrine would be my second triple land which is great in Five-Color. As Kiss is good in both archetypes I go for it.

The Kinght-Captain is good as well but I don’t consider picking it as it’s a level lower.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Once again a very strong card but the signals I’m sending are really bad.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

Good news. My deck will be stable and I will be able to use my Vampire’s ability.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Call to Heel is better than Hindering Light as it can’t be used against many of the format’s removal spells (Bloodpyre Elemental Executioner’s Capsule Oblivion Ring).

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

A pretty good card in Esper.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

No matter how good Agony Warp is no non-rare card can beat a four-mana 4/4 flyer.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

A very close pick again. I usually like Agony Warp here but the Capsule is more synergic in Esper (Sanctum Gargoyle Glaze Fiend Faerie Mechanist).

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Good on its own and insane if I can get Etherium Astrolabe.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Nothing great for me so I’ll pick the Charm in case I have enough fixers to splash it.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Obelisk of Grixis could help me use Vein Drinker’s ability but I pick the Duelist as it can destroy Red decks.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

I’m confident in my current fixers so I don’t feel like picking the Obelisk. I like Esper Charm but I rather like the one-color pick to avoid mana problems.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Fantastic in the deck in particular with Puppet Conjurer.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

Can be useful.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

I never like facing this card… plus it’s a rare. Mwahaha.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

Not exactly the first pick I was dreaming of. But it can help me splash Bant Charm. Zombie Outlander would be a pretty good sideboard card but I like it a little less.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

One of the best rares I could be passed. And its mythic. And it’s shining.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Another great rare for me. Sludge Strider is great too but these aren’t that close.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

I don’t have many Black permanents yet and I have two Etherium Sculptors two good reasons to pick Cormorants over Strix.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Maybe the best common plus uncommon I could receive in Conflux.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

And now the second copy of the best common for my deck. My deck is becoming very good indeed.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

I am not a huge fan of that card but it is a very fine blocker against Red/Green decks.

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

I have almost no way to stop this card. Glad I can counterdraft it.

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

A one-mana 2/2… I guess it’s a fair ratio for a pick 11.

This deck is great. It has bombs fixers card advantage and a curve. Only removal (Capsule and Warp) is a little short but that shouldn’t keep me from doing really well.

Glaze Fiend didn’t make the cut even though it would have been pretty good here. My deck is great so I want it to be stable and a card that’s very good half the time and useless the other half doesn’t help here.

ROUND 1: Jund (Limited rating: 1782)
My opponent has a pretty aggressive start with Ranger of Eos fetching double Wild Nacatl. The rest of his draw is fine as well but my Tower Gargoyle stops all his board until my other flyers go all the way through. Game 2 starts pretty badly as I’m absolutely unable to deal with his Jund Battlemage. As my guys are generally better than his I still manage to take control and I’m pretty sure I’ll win… until he plays Violent Ultimatum and kills my three best creatures paving the way to win the game.
In the third game I bring in Traumatic Visions as I think I shouldn’t lose to any other card other than his Ultimatum. Fortunately I don’t even need it as he is unable to stop my Conjurer/Astrolabe combo.

ROUND 2: Esper (1753)
I play Tidehollow Sculler on turn 2 and see a very nice hand featuring Wretched Banquet Martial Coup two good creatures but no Plains. I take the Banquet and hope I can kill him before he draws his double White. His next draw: Armillary Sphere. Okay I’ll have to kill him quickly. I play Tower Gargoyle on turn 4 and kill his first guy. On turn 7 I put him down to zero exactly.
The second game is much harder as not only does my Sculler reveal Martial Coup but it’s sat in a superb hand. I decide to try and move all in playing Mirror-Sigil Sergeant. Two turns later he draws removal for my Sculler and plays the Martial Coup he just got back. I struggle to stay in the game with my Steelclad Serpent handling his seven-guy army! A few turns later I have an unstable control on the game as a removal spell almost gives him the game at any point. That’s when my deck offers me Magister Sphinx. Two turns and a suicidal attack later the game is over.

ROUND 3: Esper (1740)
My opponent is another Esper Mage proving the great quality of the UWB cards in that draft. After winning a pretty easy game 1 I have a much tougher second game. I am pretty confident of winning it with my opening hand as it will be hard for him to deal with Vein Drinker. On my board I also have Court Homunculus and a Metallurgeon with summoning sickness while he has Esper Battlemage Scornful Aether-Lich and Parasitic Strix. When I activate my vampire on his Battlemage during his upkeep I’m surprised to see he gives my big guy -1/-1. Does he have a Blister Beetle and simply forgot my guy would get -1/-1? That’s what I think at first hand.
When he attacks me with both of his remaining guys there is only one reason I can find to justify his play: Infest. Therefore my Court Homunculus chump-blocks his 2/4. In his second main phase he thinks for a little while and eventually play Infest causing all of his guys to die. A few turns later while the game is very close I draw Magister Sphinx and win in two turns.

Until tomorrow…
