Monday, June 21st – Hall of Famer Olivier Ruel takes us through an 8-4 draft queue on Magic Online. He shares some comprehensive thoughts about both the picks and the games, and talks us through each step of the way! If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

The card is great and it fixes me into the most powerful as well as the most drafted archetype in the format: Green Eldrazi. Usually the deck uses a GR core with a splash for some Black removal and Dread Drone.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

I don’t know how good Tuktuk is exactly but I love Overgrown Battlement. Also the fact that the underrated Battle Rampart is pretty good with Eldrazi creatures makes my 0/4 even better.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Maybe the top common in this archetype.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Now that I have so many spawn producers and Overgrown Battlement maybe it would be nice to have something to accelerate into.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

The deck will most likely be three colors and it will need fixers.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

In pack 3 if I don’t have an Overgrown Battlement I pick the Spider but the wall makes my 0/4 better and I hope I can get many more.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

An option to consider. The wall blocks most guys in the format is obviously good with Overgrown Battlement and it can actually kill pretty quickly in the right deck.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

The card is rarely good enough to be played main deck (unless you’re very aggro) but it is still a pretty good sideboard card.

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

Excellent in a dek using Aura Gnarlid or several early monsters but pretty useless in the deck I’m building at the moment.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Another of the most underrated cards in the format. In the right deck the Bombardment can just kill on its own [Not strictly true… – Craig amused].

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

Kozilek’s Predator may be excellent but the choice is not close here. I’m building a deck whose goal is to produce a maximum of mana so I’m not picking anything over an excellent card which has “X” in its casting cost

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

The best card for me is Ogre Sentry but I don’t doubt for a second that it will make the wheel. Then I know I’m unlikely to play the Spawnsire but if I get good Black I don’t mind kicking all the Red walls and have my deck base-GB in which case it will be great in my deck. Not very likely but still enough to make me pick it over a Venerated Teacher.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

I’m not playing more than one Battle Rampart if I don’t have three Overgrown Battlements and this second Evolving wilds makes me more comfortable about my mana.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

A sad 6th pick but I was aware when I decided to go for the most popular archetype that there were pretty good chances I wouldn’t get great feedback.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Mediocre in most decks but very good once in a while. Hatedrafting Wavewatch would probably have been smartest.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Considering the fact that I haven’t been passed any Black at all I start considering I could splash another color. And as I have two Overgrown Battlements and Vent Sentinel

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

That WGR Wall deck actually starts looking good. It’d be good to get Warmonger Chariot now.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

A great card and a high drop which is something my deck is still lacking.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

Okay now I can accelerate into pretty much anything. One or two more heavy drops would help.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Exactly what I needed. When it enters the battlefield on turn 5 or 6 the 8/8 should pretty much always win the game.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

I can definitely cast Emrakul in this deck. Now is it better than Staggershock? I have no idea but it is not every day you have the opportunity to play the coolest card in the format.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

As I said earlier more than welcome with three Overgrown Battlements.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I wanted at least two more heavy drops. I got three including the fantastic Gigantomancer. Actually in my deck it’s less good as half my creatures can’t attack and another few are already bigger than 7/7

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

The Invoker is not so useful in my deck as I have enough win conditions but I would fear facing the double Crusade.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

Weeee!

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

Almost an instant win with Emrakul or Gelatinous Genesis.

Gigantomancer
Ulamog’s Crusher
Emrakul the Aeon’s Town

Guard Duty
Spawning Breath
Awakening Zone
Skittering Invasion
Gelatinous Genesis

The deck is pretty good but it is still very vulnerable to flyers as I have almost no removal as well as no Spider or Spider Umbra. But as long as I avoid facing too many flyers I don’t worry much.

Round 1 versus GRb

A mirror match: exactly what I was hoping for. We don’t race much and I can cast my board and quietly sit behind my walls waiting for a bomb to show up as he has played Vendetta on my tun 6 Ulamog’s Crusher. At some point I draw Genesis make five 5/5s and we advance to game 2.

In game 2 he doesn’t do anything spectacular again and turn 5 Pelakka Wurm is more than enough to advance to the next round.

Round 2 versus GR

Well well well. Things couldn’t possibly go better. Once again game 1 turns into a staring contest until I draw one of my bombs. It’s Gigantomancer this time which with Emrakul’s Hatcher and his three little friends make good enough for an instant kill. In game 2 I mulligan and can’t find my white mana and die to a turn 6 Ulamog’s Crusher which would let’s face it probably have been enough even if I did have my White mana. In game 3 I open with a pair of Overgrown Battlement and another three walls including Soulbound Guardians which keep him from attacking. I could cast Genesis for the win but with 15 mana in play and Emrakul in hand I’d rather slowroll for a couple of turns and cast my big guy for the win.

Round 3 versus UW Level Up

“Split?”
“No sorry I ‘d rather play.”

Turn 1 Island turn 2 Plains… ouch. Just exactly what I didn’t want to face. He has Narcolepsy for my turn 5 Crusher as well as a pair of Makindi Griffin which give him the first. In the second he has Narcolepsy again for my turn 6 Pelakka Wurm but nothing for turn 7 Ulamog’s Crusher. As Battle Rampart gave both of those haste the game is pretty much over by then. Regress will buy a little time but the match ends a couple of turns later.

I go make some tea come back to my computer and realize I have a game waiting for me. Oh yeah that was only game 2.

Game 3 starts ideally as I have Spawning Breath for his turn 3 Dawnglare Invoker as well as my first Awakening Zone of the draft on my own third turn. He does follow up with a couple of Griffins but they can’t do much against my turn 5 Gigantomancer as he doesn’t have Regress this time. From turn 7 he has to keep chumpblockers and when he eventually draws his bounce spell on the following turn his board is already a desert and I win the game and the draft.

Until next time…
