If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

A one-mana spell which destroys two or three decks at the table and which is “only” very good against everything else? Not much of a choice here.

If it wasn’t there I’d be picking Heat Ray the removal which can deal with the most creatures in the format and then Rapacious One an expensive card but one that can win on its own.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Three cards are clearly interesting here: Narcolepsy Last Kiss and Kozilek’s Predator. I mean I like Bramblesnap and Growth Spasm a lot but as far as Green cards are concerned Predator is just better.

Then Last Kiss is the worst of the three but it is the one I’m the most likely to end up playing. Playing Red and Black in the same deck probably means being RBG Spawn in which Black is usually a splash. Not exactly the best configuration for Guul Draz Assassin to shine. Also when I have strong rares I like to build control decks to give them time to shine. Narcolepsy could give me that control deck and it is simply the strongest card here.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

A card I’d pick no common over. Maybe I would consider things if the pack had an Enclave Cryptologist but it doesn’t.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Surrakar Spellblade would be good in the absolute perfect deck for it but Deprive will be better 99% of the time.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Shrivel and Arrogant Bloodlord are two cards I’m still having trouble evaluating. A UB or UBR control deck shouldn’t lose guys to the Nausea-effect but Arrogant Bloodlord is in the worst case a pretty decent blocker. I go with the -1/-1 spell but I’m far from sure the pick is correct.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

Bloodthrone Vampire can make Domestication efficient against the biggest guys but the card is not nearly as good in UB as it is in a deck generating Eldrazi Spawns.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Inquisition of Kozilek is pretty good in draft but as I can’t really be control and refuse a card that will provide me card advantage. Also I’ll probably end up with 5 or 6 levelers and the artifact helps them level up pretty quickly.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

I don’t know what’s best from See Beyond Inquisition and Bloodlord but I choose to go for the card which is always good. I don’t like See Beyond much in aggro decks like UW Levelers in which you always have better stuff to do with your mana but in a control deck the card is always useful.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

The card is worth around pick 6 and therefore has no business being here.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

Regardless to how many tix the Planeswalker is worth on MTGO there’s no spell I would want here and I still have 2/3 of the draft to get passed some Prisms and Evolving Wild in order to run it.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

At first glance the card looks okay. Of course it’s actually very strong and even though I’d rather pick most removal over it there’s no shame in having it as a second pick.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

If I had at least one fixer I’d pick Guard Duty and hope for Hartebeest but I don’t. Then Bala Ged Scorpion would be good too but I’m pretty confident I’ll get many good spells to return with the defender.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

I love the card in Green but far less in this type of deck. Well I guess I need finishers.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Merfolk Skyscout is nearly as good as a removal option but Vendetta is still better and I have Mnemonic Wall to make it even stronger.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

The Teacher would be tempting as well but I don’t have enough levelers to make good use of it yet.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Searches for Domestication and Narcolepsy but I’m really going to need those fixers.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

No matter how many good cards are here I can’t afford to pass a Prism. Not only does it fix my mana and should allow me to splash my White it can also help me play a spell on turn 6 after casting Dreamstone Hedron and therefore not hurt my tempo.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

Not very useful in my deck but I won’t be playing anything else.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

This card has absolutely no business being here. In the right deck (any deck which plans on being up on life on turn 4 and / or which plays first basically) the card is worth 3rd or 4th pick. It is in the worse case scenario an excellent sideboard card against anything slower than you or any mage who’s going second.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

Vendetta would be easier to cast but I don’t care much if I can’t play the Commander on turn 2. Even on turn 6 it is still a 4/4 flyer.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

Fits my game plan (kill their guys resist play a bomb) perfectly.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

This time the 2/2 has gotten pretty good for my deck.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

I love the Spawnsire but it won’t shine much in this very deck while Halimar Wavewatch is both excellent for me and even better for my opponents.

Pack 3 pick 5:

Vengeance
” “ROE”);’>

My Pick:

A third fixer would be good but White is definitely splashable here.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

The card is sometimes excellent sometimes useless but it’s always useful to draft at least one. It will be either a decent 22nd card or an excellent sideboard option.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

A card I could have trouble with when facing spawns.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

The Crab won’t make it to the deck and Wrap in Flames is a card you never want your opponents to have when they are faster than you.

8 Island
6 Swamp
3 Plains
1 Evolving Wilds

1 Guul Draaz Assassin
2 Zulaport Enforcer
1 Coralhelm Commander
2 Halimar Wavewatch
1 Venerated Teacher
1 Guard Gomozoa
1 Mnemonic Wall
1 Totem-Guide Hartebeest
1 Ulamog’s Crusher

1 Vendetta
2 Narcolepsy
1 Prophetic Prism
1 See Beyond
2 Deprive
1 Domestication
1 Gideon Jura
2 Dreamstone Hedron

The deck seems excellent and it should be controlling enough to get me all the mana I need without making much trouble.

In the first round I face an RGB Eldrazi deck. He seems rather unstable. as he has many cards from all the three colors and not many fixers. In the first game he plays removal on Coralhelm Commander and Halimar Wavewatch but he doesn’t have one left when I cast Zulaport Enforcer which stops his small team before winning on its own. In game 2 I draw the very three same guys but he has a pair of removal spells again along with Virulent Swipe. I don’t find a third guy and die to Tuktuk and Emrakul’s Hatcher.

In game 3 he draws his three colors and four lands but suprisingly doesn’t do a thing while I’m waiting with two counters in hand. Zulaport Enforcer swings four times and I advance to the semis.

In round 2 I’m facing another Eldrazi deck RG this time which is piloted by my dear brother Antoine. I take the first one to my perfect Enforcer Wavewatch Venerated Teacher start. In game 2 I have a great draw but he opens with turn 5 Ulamog’s Crusher and turn 6 World at War!

The third game is definitely the most interesting. After struggling a bit to reach my fifth land at the beginning I eventually have enough mana to cast Gideon but I must wait a while in order to clean up his multiple tokens/Bombardment board. When I eventually do the game is looking rather good. He’s on 20 with Ondu Giant two Spawns and one card in hand when I’m on 6 with Gedeon Guard Gomazoa and Dreamstone Hedron as well as Deprive and Narcolepsy in hand. I shoot the 2/4 with my Planeswalker and pass the turn. Then what’s pretty much the absolute worst case scenario happens. Antoine plays Spawning Breath on Gideon at end of turn swings with his three guys to finish my planeswalker off and taps all his mana to cast Artisan of Kozilek returning Emrakul’s Hatcher and three more tokens to the board. I then draw land sacrifice Hedron and find three more lands.

Until next time…
