P1P2 – Spray is good in any deck I end up in here and I already was thinking of moving into Five-Color Obelisks after P1.
P1P3 – Another tough pick already. Bloodpyre is the most flexible here though if I’d taken Goblin Assault 2nd then I would certainly follow up with Quietus Spike.
P1P4 – Not much here so might as well commit to Obelisks for the most part.

P2P1 – Mise?

There was definitely no shortage of bomb rares for my deck in this draft. I do wish I had a shot at some Tri-Lands or at least more panoramas but I guess you have to make do. I’d also play a 6th Obelisk in this deck if I had one to help enable all of the Ultimatums.

I’m fairly certain I could’ve also went many other directions in this draft but I have an addiction to Cruel Ultimatum and whenever I open it I usually go right into this archetype (or straight UBR).

Round 1 was against UGW Exalted. Game 1 I got absolutely destroyed by double Deft Duelist and some Exalted guys. I didn’t like my chances in the overall matchup simply because I didn’t have a Jund Charm or Infest to deal with those nuisances. Game 2 he mulled to five and only made a couple of guys while I went straight to double Rockcaster Platoon. I was at far too high a life total for him to really come back and he had to start chump blocking soon afterwards. Game three he got a quick draw but I had a turn 4 Knight-Captain of Eos which bought me enough time to Brilliant Ultimatum into Violent Ultimatum and kill all of his guys save a lone Duelist. On the next turn I ripped Cruel Ultimatum and he conceded with an empty grip and way behind on board.

Round 2 was against what seemed to be GRW splashing for Broodmate Dragon and Stoic Angel. It could also just be that he was playing lots of colors without many Obelisks (or he didn’t draw them). Whatever the case this is where all of the Tri-Lands went as he must’ve picked them very early. Game 1 I played Brilliant Ultimatum which netted me Empyrial Archangel. He tried to fight back but I played Rockcaster Platoon and killed him from 6 life. Game 2 I got severely manaflooded and lost pretty easily. Game 3 I played played an early Grixis Battlemage and looted into Violent and Cruel Ultimatums which I promptly cast (I know I’m a luckbox right?). He didn’t do a ton this game and it’s hard to lose after casting two Ultimatums.

Despite wanting to play it out I had to split the finals due to other commitments. At least I broke the losing streak!

Until tomorrow…

Nick
