P1P4 – I was planning on taking Nacatl here but I decided to take Gargoyle to steer clear of Naya if possible and also keep options for Esper or Bant open.

P2P2 – I know the writing to go Naya is on the wall but I decided to firmly ignore it in this draft and stick to what’s been working for me.
P2P5 – I guess I should’ve taken Cylian Elf over Metallurgeon last pick.

I was not overly pleased with how I handled this draft or with the final product. I know there were a lot of places I probably could’ve made different picks and ended up in a normal deck. This deck has potential with all of the bombs but I couldn’t help feeling like I didn’t draft optimally.

Round 1 I played against Naya. Game 1 I had a slow draw with my first play being a Sanctum Gargoyle. His draw was really fast with Rip-Clan Crashers and then a Rakeclaw Gargantuan which I had no real answer to since I was behind. I was forced into a spot where I had to block with Battlegrace Angel and he had to burn to send us to game 2. Game 2 my draw was much better and his big ground men felt awful silly staring down Metallurgeon. I killed him with a couple of fliers and an Infiltrator rather quickly. Game 3 I had a solid draw again and time-walked him by Excommunicating his Ridge Rannet. He started building up fatties on the ground but Sharuum showed up and returned a Sanctum Gargoyle earning the concession.

Round 2 was against GWR. Game 1 we both played guys and then he played Flameblast Dragon which I had no answer to. Games 2 and 3 were very similar to game 1 except I actually had a good evasion curve and also had the O. Ring for his Dragon (since he insisted on playing it in all three games).

In the finals I played against Naya again. All three games he curved out very well and I also played turn 5Battlegrace Angel in all three. Normally that would mean that I won but he ripped Oblivion Ring in game 2 (after I won the first game unopposed) when he was on two life. After that I drew five straight lands and lost. Game 3 I drew a total of five spells and he made a 7/7 Thunder-Thrash and Ringed my Angel again.

At least I’m making it to the finals now and not to sound results oriented but maybe outside of the box thinking is the way to go in this format.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
