P1P1 – I’m not sure if anyone takes Rhox War Monk here but I felt Magma Spray offered the best options and flexibility. Getting pidgeonholed into three colors on pick 1 also isn’t usually my bag baby.
P1P3 – I could see this pick being pretty controversial as it probably makes more sense to just take Mosstodon here. More on this later.

The rest of the draft was probably pretty crazy to you guys as well and if you want thoughts on specific picks I’ll answer in the forums. To give you an overview of what I was doing here that might answer a ton of questions I was drafting a new archetype I’m testing out: Five-Color Red. I promise you this is also no gimmick as I haven’t focused on another color with the intention of splashing like I’m trying with Red. The point of the archetype is that Red is by far the best color in the set and if you make it your core you’ll likely get a solid amount of removal (especially now that Skeletonize is fixed). With that base you can splash lots of things and also find some odd synergies. For instance Incurable Ogre plus Welkin Guide has been treating me rather well in live drafts I’ve done lately so that was part of the motivation to try out this archetype. It’s possible I could do a strategy guide on the deck in the future but I’m also not entirely sure it’s necessary because once you get the concept the actual drafting isn’t super hard.

1 Rockcaster Platoon
1 Guardians of Akrasa
2 Incurable Ogre
1 Carrion Thrash
1 Quietus Spike
1 Tidehollow Sculler
2 Dragon Fodder
2 Welkin Guide
1 Magma Spray
1 Sarkhan Vol
2 Obelisk of Bant
1 Vithian Stinger
1 Kederekt Creeper
1 Blightning
1 Jund Charm
2 Branching Bolt
1 Bone Splinters
1 Scourge Devil
1 Crumbling Necropolis
1 Bant Panorama
1 Arcane Sanctum
3 Swamp
7 Mountain
2 Forest
2 Plains

Sideboard
1 Mountain
1 Deathgreeter
1 Obelisk of Jund
1 Dispeller’s Capsule
2 Relic of Progenitus
1 Obelisk of Grixis
1 Savage Hunger
1 Angelsong
1 Bloodthorn Taunter
1 Glaze Fiend
1 Sighted-Caste Sorcerer
2 Windwright Mage
2 Gustrider Exuberant
1 Undead Leotau
1 Swamp
1 Plains

Round 1 was against UGW. Game 1 I drew Bant Obelisk on turn 2 which allowed me to cast every spell in my hand. That may not seem exciting right off the bat but I got two for one with Branching Bolt and then started beating on him with some dudes and Welkin Guides. Game 2 I assembled Visara the Dreadful on turn 6 by putting Quietus Spike on my Vithian Stinger. My opponent obviously was not happy about this and tried to answer with Blister Beetle but I pumped my guy up with Jund Charm. Visara went the distance.

Round 2 was against GWu. Game 1 I assembled Visara again like a true master and he had no Oblivion Ring in sight. Game 2 I lost due to drawing no Green mana the entire game with 2x Bolt and Jund Charm in hand against an army of small creatures. Game 3 I played Sarkhan Vol early and defended it until I got the tokens off. Needless to say I managed to get there after that.

The finals against BR was yet another letdown unfortunately. Game 1 I mulled to five and did basically nothing before getting beat down by a bunch of BR dudes like Goblin Deathraiders. Game 2 I mulled again on the play and kept a risky hand that had lots of potential. I never drew another land and that was that.

If you guys want more comments on the archetype in general or just specific picks definitely feel free to ask in the forums.

See you tomorrow.

Nick
