p2p3 Torture and Raiders were both definitely options here
p3p1 Sooooo 17 Tix?
p3p2 Doomgape over Mimic.
p3p3 Asling the Extinguisher over Unmake and Canker Abomination.
p3p5 I know you guys would take Hatchling but I have 4 playable Scarecrows
I was hoping to take Banishing Knacks in pack 3 and hopefully a Mine-Captain or two but things ended up going differently. I planned on playing the Figure of Destiny but decided to skew towards mono Black during deckbuilding.
Round 1 was against GW. Game 1 he played out two Seedcradle Witches and a bunch of good Green men and bashed my slow draw. Game 2 looked really bad to start off as he curved out perfectly going Witch Safehold Elite Hungry Spriggan Rosheen Meanderer. I was on the back foot for most of this game and ended up having to play Doomgape and pray he didn’t rip Plains to kill me from 5 life. The rest of the game involved saccing Doomgape twice for 20 life and then putting Power of Fire on Pili-Pala for the win. I went into game 3 with just under six minutes remaining on my clock. Game 3 was probably the most epic game of Magic I’ve ever played in my life. I really wish I could do it justice in a writeup. I got Power of Fire down in Pili-Pala early but using the ability takes a lot of time and this made my life difficult being low on my clock. Then he played Howl of the Night Pack for six tokens which again made me use Pili-Pala like crazy. I killed all of the tokens in two turns and was left with a mere 1:30 on my clock with my opponent at 18 life. Somehow I end up assembling a win thanks to Sootstoke Kindler enabling hasty Scuzzback Marauders followed by hasty Doomgape to take the match with a mere 26 seconds left. Phew.
Round 2 my opponent was UR. Game 1 I played Scuttlemutt and then Ashling into his empty board and the rest of the game was basically a joke as he tried to hang on but couldn’t beat my Abyss. Game 2 I got a really good draw again that featured turn 6 Midnight Banshee followed by turn 7 Doomgape for the match.
Round 3 was against GR. Game 1 was really close after I emptied his hand with Cinderhaze Wretch and Gloomlance but he’d gotten me low and drew Tattermunge Witch to stomp over the top for the last few points. Game 2 I misclicked and played my Soul Reap before another Black spell saving my opponent 3 life. Thankfully this didn’t end up mattering as he didn’t do a whole lot and I dropped out Doomgape again to take him out. Game 3 was quite frustrating as my opponent stalled on three lands and I couldn’t draw my sixth forever to play a hasty Midnight Banshee followed by hasty Doomgape. I did get Ashling out which pounded on him for a bit until he dealt with it with a few Wither guys. At one point I thought he was actually going to come back until I got Banshee and Doomgape out and then sacced Banshee to Doomgape a couple of turns later and built Pili-Pala with Power of Fire for the win.
Overall I didn’t play my best Magic in this draft but my deck was super synergistic and it all came together.
Until tomorrow…
