After a couple of misses in this column now, despite having drafted good decks, I decided it was time to really get going. Of course, I started with a ridiculous bomb in Teferi, and after that I did my best to cut off Blue as best as I could. The third pick Considerations was nice, as it told me that Blue was fairly open on the right. Finding a second color was tougher, and I only branched out if i really had no other option in Blue. I love the U/R deck with bounce and Shamblers, so set out to draft that, and was even awarded with a late pack 3 Sentinel. Other then that the draft was fairly straightforward.
I decided to play a Mystical Teachings, powered by the two Prismatic Lenses for flashback, as it got me my three best cards (Teferi, Sulfurous Blast, and Careful Consideration) as well as gave me a good game plan versus fast starts with tutoring of Blast. Why do these things keep getting passed? Teachings is pretty slow though, despite the fact that it was amazing in my deck, thus I only ran one. I am not sure if I should have played the second.
In round 1 I played against W/U weenie, and as you can tell my deck is geared to beat that deck pretty well. In game 1 I lost because i got greedy with Shambler, while he had Ication Crier out, and took about ten unnecesary damage because he got me with a Celestial Crusader. Never get greedy is a rule i usually try and live by, but now it got me. It looked like I was going to lose game 2 after a mulligan as well, as he had a decent start and I drew a fair amount of lands and Lenses, but not a lot of spells. The last possible turn I could, I ripped the Teachings with nine mana up (I hardcast a Serpent the turn before) and got Blast to stabilize. After that my card advantge took it home, because when he played Griffin Guide on his guy, I played Teferi in response and killed it, to stop any tricks. Game 3 my deck did what it does versus weenie decks, and I Wrathed twice using Shamblers.
Round 2 I played against G/B, and won two easy games with his draws being awkward, and my deck being awesome. Mystical Teachings was once again an MVP.
I drew in the last round to do some more drafting.
