Welcome back to my Daily Financial Value Of Theros articles! We’re up to 48 out of 53 rares spoiled, so I’m expecting the entire set to be spoiled by tomorrow (usually the full spoiler goes up on Gatherer the Monday before the Prerelease). A card named Steam Augury has been rumored (but not independently confirmed) as one of those five rares, but I’m not going to talk about it until there’s independent confirmation.
Here’s a guide to how I review these crazy cards:
Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card, by the time this article goes live.
Future Price – Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Theros.
Future Price – Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Born of the Gods) comes out.
Future Price – Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now, when the next fall set is released (name unknown).
Starting Price: $3 Current Price: $3 Future Price (Short Term): $4 Future Price (Medium Term): $2 Future Price (Long Term): $2 |
I saw what happened to the value of Slagstorm—it spiked for a very short window and then tanked hard. This happened even before Slagstorm was printed as a two-of in an Event Deck. I think Anger of the Gods is on par with Slagstorm (can’t hit players, but exiles instead of killing), so I don’t think it’s a good long-term bet.
Starting Price: $1.50 Current Price: $2 Future Price (Short Term): $2 Future Price (Medium Term): $1 Future Price (Long Term): $1 |
A 2/1 for R—or for that matter, a 2/1 one-drop in any color—used to be a chase card. These days, it’s not as big of a deal due to Wizards pushing the one-drop slot a little harder.
In Standard (post-rotation):
Dryad Militant (W or G)
Faerie Imposter (U)
Soldier of the Pantheon (W)
Tormented Hero (B)
Conditional two-power creatures that see play at one CMC:
Boros Elite (W)
Experiment One (G)
Nivmagus Elemental (U or R)
Rakdos Cackler (R or B)
Vile Rebirth (B)
My point being that a Jackal Pup with a slight upside (bad firebreathing with a drawback) isn’t a card I’d get really excited about. This isn’t Stromkirk Noble or Vexing Devil—it’s a 2/1 that may hit once before running into 3/3 creatures in the two-drop slot in current Standard. Jackal Pup sees no play in Legacy, so unless this becomes a staple in Modern (it won’t—it’s not a Goblin), I think this’ll basically be a bulk rare in the long term.
Starting Price: $1 Current Price: $1 Future Price (Short Term): $0.50 Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50 Future Price (Long Term): $0.50 |
Seems interesting for Commander play; seems like a 3/3 that needs three turns (the turn you cast it, the turn you put a fate counter on a creature, and then turn you activate to target a creature with a fate counter) to do anything—which means it’s almost guaranteed to be useless for tournament play.
Price Changes Since The Last Article
Agent of the Fates: From $1 to $4 – I’m still a little perplexed by this one because I don’t see a lot of great ways in Standard that you’d want to use to target your own creature with a spell that doesn’t outright just kill your own creature. I’m not going to argue with eBay prices/sales figures.
