Daily Financial Value Of Theros (9/11)

Get the financial scoop on the latest spoiled Theros cards from StarCityGames.com’s General Manager and finance guru Ben Bleiweiss!

Welcome back to my Daily Financial Value Of Theros articles!

Here’s a guide to how I review these crazy cards:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price – Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Theros
Future Price – Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Born of the Gods) comes out.
Future Price – Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now when the next fall set is released (name unknown).

Fabled Hero

Starting Price: $2

Current Price: $2

Future Price (Short Term): $2

Future Price (Medium Term): $1

Future Price (Long Term): $1.50

Fabled Hero is one of the cards in the set I’d buy into early the second it drops below $2. If heroic ends up getting pushed hard through enchantment – Auras later in the block (think Rancor style effects), this is one of the best of the heroic cards. It can get huge quickly and fits great in the top curve of a White Weenie deck.

Prognostic Sphinx

Starting Price: $2

Current Price: $2

Future Price (Short Term): $1

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75

Future Price (Long Term): $1

Typically the first week of spoilers has most of the really splashy cards for the set. Prognostic Sphinx reminds me of the two Sphinx cards from Zendikar (Sphinx of Jwar Isle and Sphinx of Lost Truths). Both of those Sphinx cards saw a decent amount of play for a short window of time and had brief price spikes. Prognostic Sphinx is equally playable but also is not really spectacular or exciting. I’d be a lot more bullish on Prognostic Sphinx if the only drawback to making it hexproof were losing a card, not tapping it in addition.

Soldier of the Pantheon

Starting Price: $3

Current Price: $4

Future Price (Short Term): $5

Future Price (Medium Term): $4

Future Price (Long Term): $4

Will see a lot of Standard play—it fights against too many staples in the format to not see play (think Boros Reckoner and most of Ravnica block). This is one of the few rares in the set that I think will hold preorder price for as long as Return to Ravnica block is a thing.

Swan Song

Starting Price: $6

Current Price: $6

Future Price (Short Term): $4

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $1

My choice for the most overhyped card in the set. EBay playsets are finishing at $32–$40 each. I’m pricing these to sell well below the already-established market value. A conditional counterspell with a drawback at rare isn’t a $10 card—not with the amount of Theros that is printed. I will note that for older formats (Vintage/Legacy) the foil versions of this card will be sought after and will hold value.

Price Changes Since The Last Article

Elspeth, Sun’s Champion: From $25 to $30 – Almost sold out of our allocated preorder quantity of Elspeth. Despite being a six-mana planeswalker, early playtesting by pros with this Elspeth has been pretty positive.

Hero’s Downfall: From $4 to $5 – May end up being the preeminent single-target removal spell in the new format.
