Welcome back to my Daily Financial Value Of Theros articles! As of today, all fifteen Theros mythics and 40 of the 53 rares have been spoiled (one of the remaining thirteen rares is being previewed tonight on The Magic Show at midnight, so check it out—shameless plug for Evan Erwin!). This set continues to be very above average in terms of the power level of the cards, but the majority of the good cards are suited best for midrange decks. Either way, let’s look at the cards spoiled overnight and go over the (many) cards that shifted value since yesterday!
Here’s a guide to how I review these crazy cards:
Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Theros.
Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Born of the Gods) comes out.
Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now when the next fall set is released (name unknown).
Starting Price: $0.75 Current Price: $0.50 Future Price (Short Term): $0.50 Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50 Future Price (Long Term): $0.50 |
Bulk Rare. Very great flavor, but great flavor doesn’t make for value or playability.
Starting Price: $4 Current Price: $4 Future Price (Short Term): $5 Future Price (Medium Term): $3 Future Price (Long Term): $4 |
Four of the five God weapons are very good—only the Bident of Thassa is found wanting. The reanimation ability on the Whip is extremely strong and combines well with both Erebos himself and with lifelink. I can see the Whip pulling out wins in Standard due to grinding out a game of attrition against most decks. Should see a bunch of play, and I only think the price will drop medium term due to the supply of Theros I expect to see opened.
Price Changes Since The Last Article
Abhorrent Overlord: From $1 to $0.50 – Bulk pricing.
Anax and Cymede: From $3 to $2 – Value hurt by being in the Duel Deck.
Anthousa, Setessan Hero: From $1 to $0.50 – Value hurt by being both a release promo and an Intro Pack rare. Might be a sleeper hit—can’t hurt to pick up at the lowest price it’ll be.
Arbor Colossus: From $1 to $0.75 – Fighting with a lot of other cards for the midrange green slot.
Bident of Thassa: From $2 to $1.50 – The weakest of the five weapons and also a promo foil.
Boon Satyr: From $2 to $3 – Sales on Boon Satyr continue to be strong, and I expect it to see a lot of Standard play.
Celestial Archon: From $1 to $0.50 – See Anthousa.
Nighthowler: From $2 to $1.50 – Not selling as quickly as I’d like, but I still think this card could be a sleeper hit.
Rageblood Shaman: From $2 to $1 – Looks like Minotaurs are just not popular as a tribe so far!
Spear of Heliod: From $2 to $3 – Sold through to speculators in quantities of 40 as I restocked it—guess the price started a little too low (especially since I put Glorious Anthem effects at $2-$3 range in Standard and this is Glorious Anthem with an upside).
Tymaret, the Murder King: From $3 to $2 – Can’t hit creatures, so Tymaret isn’t generating hype at the rate I’d like to see out of a $3 preorder card.
P.S. Congratulations to the hundreds of people who are in line to get credit with our Preorder Price Guarantee on the cards listed above!
