Hello everyone and welcome back to my daily series of financial articles about Born of the Gods!
This is the last of two reviews before the entire set should be spoiled—look for the full Gatherer/Visual Spoiler update to be up either this Friday or next Monday.
How I review:
Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price – Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Born of the Gods.
Future Price – Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Journey into Nyx) comes out.
Future Price – Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now when the next winter set is released (name unknown still).
Starting Price: $1 Current Price: $1 Future Price (Short Term): $0.75 Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75 Future Price (Long Term): $0.50 |
The closest comparison I have to this is Soul’s Majesty, a green card-draw spell that flopped completely.
Advantage to Hunter’s Prowess: Also grants a creature +3/+3 and trample.
Advantage to Soul’s Majesty: The creature doesn’t have to attack. You draw the cards unconditionally—you can’t be "chump blocked" into drawing zero cards.
I think that Hunter’s Prowess has the potential to be a one- or two-of sideboard card for mirror matches between green-based midrange decks. It can break a stalemate or draw a ridiculous number of cards if your opponent isn’t sporting removal (aka fatty mirror match). Beyond that it’s too fragile to really see competitive play.
Starting Price: $1.50 Current Price: $1 Future Price (Short Term): $0.50 Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50 Future Price (Long Term): $0.50 |
So here’s the same conundrum that every punisher card has—whichever mode you want is not the one that your opponent is likely to choose. If you’re playing an aggressive deck, you’ll likely end up with a 3/1 creature and a free Lightning Strike (since you’re not playing high-mana cards in an aggressive deck). In a deck with lots of high-cost sorceries, you’re probably going to end up with a 5/3 haste creature your opponent has an answer for. The majority of punisher cards have not worked out for competitive play (look back all the way to Judgment—they just don’t cut it), and I expect Oracle of Bones won’t work out either.
Changes
I dropped a lot of cards in the $1.49-$1.99 range to $1 today. Congrats to all the people who earned Preorder Price Guarantee store credit!
Pack Value
To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:
(2R + 1M) / 80
That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to "real" value if you’re looking to trade with other players. So I’m omitting the value of any rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).
Several rares dropped below the $2 threshold today, including Hero of Leina Tower, Heroes’ Podium, and Whelming Wave. The price on Spirit of the Labyrinth also went down to $8, as $10 was slightly too high a price for the market to bear.
Hero of Iroas: $2
Pain Seer: $12
Spirit of the Labyrinth: $8 (down from $10)
Temple of Enlightenment: $5
Temple of Malice: $5
Temple of Plenty: $5
Total Rare Value: $37
Hey look—all ten mythic rares are spoiled! Chromanticore dropped from $4 to $3 and is now off this list.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos: $25
Ephara, God of the Polis: $10
Flame-Wreathed Phoenix: $10
Karametra, God of Harvests: $10
Kiora, the Crashing Wave: $25 (down from $30)
Mogis, God of Slaughter: $20
Phenax, God of Deception: $12
Xenagos, God of Revels: $25
Total Mythic Value: $137
So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:
(2R ($74) + 1M ($137) = $211
$232 /80 = $2.64 value per pack, or $95.04 per box (down $9 a box from yesterday).
See you all tomorrow!
