On the surface, we have a crazy looking Gifts Ungiven brew capable of many things. In reality, this deck is capable because of the interaction between Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl. Without it, it’s unlikely that a deck with this many four-drops could be viable in Modern. This deck is capable of some truly explosive turns, especially in conjunction with Garruk Wildspeaker.
Glen Elendra Archmage is very potent in Modern, but the fact that it’s slow has always been its downside. Sometimes it shows up as a sideboard card, but since this deck is usually making so much mana, Glen Elendra Archmage ends up being awesome. In combination with Master Biomancer, the Glen Elendra Archmage soft-lock is real. There’s also the interaction with Kitchen Finks that makes Master Biomancer actually look pretty sweet.
Gifts Ungiven can set up Unburial Rites and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, but it can also find Unburial Rites, Spike Feeder, Archangel of Thune, and Eternal Witness. Given enough time, that combo will actually kill your opponent. If your opponent is doing anything crazy, you can Confiscate any one of their permanents. The rest of the deck is pretty crazy too. The singleton Fleecemane Lion is the eyebrow raiser for me, but I’m guessing most people would say it’s Panglacial Wurm. Well, if you’re going to make a bunch of mana, you might as well have a way for a fetchland to turn into a giant monster, no?
