Daily Digest: The Season For Sultai

The Seasons Past Control deck made a lot of noise at the Pro Tour a few weeks back. Could this next evolution be the key to conquering the #SCGINDY Standard Classic?

Sometimes decks just need the smallest of adjustments. In this case, the Pantheon’s B/G Seasons Past deck from the Pro Tour has been tuned towards a Sultai shell.

Dragonlord Silumgar in particular has been a standout card for me in this Standard format. A creature incapable of being killed by Ultimate Price or Grasp of Darkness while also catapulting its caster ahead on the battlefield is a welcome addition to an archetype that may traditionally have a problem with staying at parity.

Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy has been surprisingly out of the spotlight as of late, but that doesn’t mean that the blue planeswalker still isn’t ridiculously powerful! All of those bullets that we have access to with the Dark Petition / Seasons Past engine are still awesome targets for Jace, Telepath Unbound’s -3 ability, and any ability to filter a control deck’s draws or slow down creatures is a welcome addition.

The fact of the matter is that the green aspect of the Pantheon’s deck was fairly supplementary. Rather, other than Seasons Past, the only key element of the deck that was green was Nissa’s Renewal. This card as a singular engine can put the control deck way out in front while buying time and working further and further towards an insurmountable end-game. Once these realizations and adjustments can be made, there is a great deal of room for expanding the archetype.

Our sideboard features the traditional cards that we might expect, but it can’t be understated how critical incorporating Negate is into a deck that is reliant on resolving a variety of five- and six-mana spells as a means to pull ahead in the late game.

Oftentimes, it’s not about expanding into crazy new archetypes, but simply tuning the existing ones. CharLy seems to have done a great job at that with this take on a Sultai Seasons Past deck!
