Death Cloud might be one of the most underrated cards in Modern.
It’s expensive, but it provides a unique effect that changes the course of a game. Many have tried to break the symmetry by using things like Guardian Idol and manlands, but what if we just had stuff like Voice of Resurgence, a couple planeswalkers, and Bitterblossom? That would allow us take advantage of Death Cloud’s loss of life by being aggressive.
Most Death Cloud decks were built around the card and typically didn’t perform well when they didn’t draw their namesake card. By playing a pile of creatures alongside it, we’re no longer reliant on Death Cloud to win. The rest of the deck features numerous combos with Archangel of Thune, many of which are great against decks like U/R Delver and Burn.
I was a little shocked to see Death Cloud alongside a pile of creatures, but it actually makes a lot of sense.
