Milling yourself for fun and profit has caught on with things like Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Unburial Rites, but back in the day, milling our opponents was a reasonable win condition. For the most part, it seems like that win condition is no longer “cool.”
Well, Earlder1 is about to bring it back.
With Khans of Tarkir, it appears that there might be finally be a critical mass of mill spells in Modern to make it a viable archetype. Altar of the Brood is a nice early drop, but Treasure Cruise is the real winner here. Together with Visions of Beyond, you should have enough gas to fight through any amount of discard or countermagic.
Obviously this deck doesn’t have much defense, but even something like Snapcaster Mage or Hedron Crab can chump block to win a race. Ghost Quarter induces searching for Archive Trap, and the Steam Vents is for the rare occasion where you’d rather cast Entering than Breaking. Of course, there are also some Slaughter Games out of the sideboard for faster combo decks, but we all know the real reason Steam Vents is there.
