Daily Digest: Boros Taxes

If you’re a white weenie player and feel your Modern options are a bit limited, perhaps you just need to splash red! See the Death and Taxes reinvention that might be good enough to hate out a win at the $5,000 Modern Premier IQ at #SCGDC!

Death and Taxes gets a bad rap, mostly because it looks so underwhelming on the surface. In reality, the sum is always greater than its parts.

This Modern port doesn’t have too much out of the ordinary, except it’s splashing red for a little spice. Lightning Bolt, Boros Charm, and even Slayers’ Stronghold might not surprise you. But Simian Spirit Guide? I’m guessing you weren’t expecting that one.

Turn 1 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is pretty nice, as is a Turn 1 Leonin Arbiter. What they’re really there for is to accelerate into Blood Moon, but I’m sure a surprise Restoration Angel will win a game or two.

Overall, the red splash seems pretty nice, and Simian Spirit Guide is a large part of why, although I would opt for Arid Mesas instead of Flooded Strands. I don’t blame _72 though — that maindeck Linvala isn’t cheap.
