When Ivan Jen won the Standard Open in Oakland with Jeskai Heroic Combo, many thought he had broken Standard. In reality, no one could really copy his results. Well, he showed up to the first two-day StarCityGames Open during the Season Four Invitational and finished in 20th place with a brand new build, showing the world that his first place finish was no fluke.
Much like Matt Nass did in the Invitational, Ivan uses Meletis Astronomer to find Jeskai Ascendancy, which was previously a weak part of the first deck — if you didn’t draw Jeskai Ascendancy, it could be difficult to win. This gives him more redundancy in his combo deck.
Other than that, it’s mostly the same deck, but that’s a relatively large change. Will more people pick this deck up in the future, or is it something only Ivan can win with?
