Welcome back to my Daily Financial Value of Fate Reforged series! We’re rounding the home stretch now, with only a handful of cards left to discuss. On Thursday, I’ll be talking about Commons and Uncommons of note from this set. On Friday, I’ll discuss foil cards that are going to have a higher-than-average foil value against the non-foil price. But for today – more rares!

Forget if you have other dragons out – is Atarka good enough to be the finisher in a ramp deck on its own? My guess is yes, as a 1- or 2-of. For seven mana, you’re getting twelve points of trampling, evasive damage the turn after it comes into play. If you’re running other dragons, then Atarka is doubling as a 6/4 Furnce of Rath. Should stay in the bulk range ($1), but should stay at the higher end of bulk.

1W. Enchantment. Whenever a permanent you control is turned face up, you gain 1 life for each creature you control.
3W: Manifest the top card of your library.
Probably a little too slow for Constructed, but also able to break stalemates, gain board advantage, and grind out life totals for a long game. Reminds me of stuff like Hoofprints of the Stag and Luminarch’s Ascension – kind-of-weird two-mana white cards that had playable times when they were Standard legal.

So they finally printed a green creature that is “X” mana for an X/X creature. At two mana, you get a 2/2. At three, a 3/3. The upside is that you could potentially get something like a 5/5 for five that turns into some other huge beast (morph) the following turn. However – I don’t think that 3/3 for three or 4/4 for four or 5/5 for five is exactly what you’re looking for right now, especially with the uncertainty of getting a creature underneath to flip. Bulk, but interesting to look at.
Changes Since the Last Article
Tasigur, the Golden Fang: At $2 and $2.50, we were being bought out 40-at-a-time by Japanese players. Seems to be selling at a fast, but not obscene, clip at $3 each.
Pack Value
To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:
(2R + 1M)/80.
That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other
players. So I’m omitting the value of any rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).
30 out of the 35 Rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!
Crux of Fate: $2
Frontier Siege: $2
Mardu Strike Leader – $2
Monastery Siege: $2
Soulflayer: $3
Total Rare Value: $19
9 out of the 10 Mythic Rares in Fate Reforged have been spoiled!
Brutal Hordechief: $10
Monastery Mentor: $30
Warden of the First Tree – $10
Total Mythic Value: $123
In addition, the five Khans fetchlands are going to be featured in Booster Packs in the land slot. See the the previous articles for the math on this, but:
If the Khans Fetchlands appear 2x per Land sheet, they add $45 in value to each Fate Reforged box.
If the Khans Fetchlands appear 1x per Land sheet, they add $22.50 in value to each Fate Reforged box.
So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:
(2R ($38) + 1M ($123) = $159
$161/80 = $2.01 value per pack, or $72.36 per box without Fetchlands.
With Fetchlands appearing at 10 per 121 packs opened, this is a $117.36 value per box.
With Fetchlands appearing at 5 per 121 packs opened, this is a $94.86 value per box.
