Round 1 versus Naya
G1 I draw the classic six land and all spells and crush him easily with two Mosstodons Cavern Thoctar Wooly Thoctar and Knight Captain of Eos.
G2 He stalls on land for a turn and I have the Excommunicate to punish him. Turn 5 Mosstodon is followed by turn 6 Cavern Thoctar and he really can’t deal. I do hold back for a turn when he hits his fourth land because I saw a Resounding Silence game 1. With two Plains and two Forests there is really nothing he can cast except Silence so by passing for a turn and playing another Thoctar I don’t really lose much. Even if he doesn’t have the Silence which is unlikely given his six cards in hand I still have a pretty overwhelming board.

Rd2 versus Esper
G1 My opponent apparently drafted the ideal Esper deck as Tidehollow Strix and double Sanctum Gargoyle continually punished my Plowbeast-type guys. After the third iteration of Tidehollow Strix eventually just run out of things to throw at him and die to fliers.
G2 This was a frustrating game insofar as I always felt ahead but couldn’t capitalize due to his multitude of tricks. His two Sanctum Gargoyles teamed up with double Resounding Wave Call to Heel and Punish Ignorance to pull out a game that actually looked quite bad for him. He was mana-light the whole game but used tricky cards to make up for it and my dumb Green monsters couldn’t quite get the job done. I died to a Cloudheath Drake the turn before I was going to kill him with groundpounders. My opponent did do quite a good job maximizing his tricks which was absolutely necessary given that he finished on one life and with few cards to spare.

Until tomorrow…
