With the release of Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man just a few weeks away, Magic’s Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, took to his blog to answer questions and confirm a few points of speculation for future Marvel sets.
While Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man will not feature Commander Decks, a sore spot for many fans of the 100-card format, Rosewater confirmed that there will be Commander Decks set in the Marvel world for future sets.

He even said the idea of a Spider-Man Commander Deck was still on the table. One reason Commander Decks were left off the product lineup for Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man was the set grew late in development and the team didn’t have the time or resources to put together Commander Decks for the first Marvel Universes Beyond booster release. Much of the design emphasis was on getting the new Pick 2 Draft format right on the first attempt.
In addition to confirming Marvel-based Commander Decks, Rosewater reminded players that there will be another Standard-legal Marvel set in 2026 (yet to be named, though Rosewater led the vision design for it). That set will be the second of what has been described as “multiple sets over multiple years” for Marvel and Magic.

Whether or not each Marvel set will have exactly one Infinity Stone is unknown, though many players are predicting that each set will use an Infinity Stone as the headliner. Rosewater hammers home that they haven’t said publicly anything about the frequency of the Infinity Stones, just that all six will be made.

One of the many reasons Magic is diving into the Marvel world for multiple sets is to capture a larger portion of the Marvel catalogue. This could mean sets based around The Avengers, X-Men, or any of the other sets of characters from the comics as the licensing agreement is for the comics, not the cinematic universe.

Previews for Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man should finish up today, but Rosewater said the full gallery for the digital versions of the cards in the Through the Omenpaths set should be revealed on Monday.
