Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has announced a new event series aimed at helping players new to Magic: The Gathering learn to play — Magic Academy!

Magic Academy events will be hosted by participating Wizards Play Network (WPN) local game stores (LGS) and will provide new players all the “…knowledge and tools to start playing the game…” During its inception with the release of Magic Foundations in November, there will be two types of Magic Academy events: Learn to Play and Deck Building.

Learn to Play

Learn to Play events are designed to be the first step in teaching new players the ropes. Attendees will be provided a “…brochure that breaks down the basics of the game, along with a reference card with all the essential details.” Players will also receive Welcome Decks to help teach the “…fundamental rules of the game, like the turn order, how combat works, and how to cast spells.”

Deck Building

The Deck Building event is targeted at slightly more advanced players, including those who attended a Learn to Play event. Attendees will first watch a video from Magic Designer, Gavin Verhey, covering the basics of deck building, before being given six Play Boosters from which they’ll build a 40-card deck.

As an additional bonus, players who purchase any intro products during Magic Academy events will earn this borderless, foil Blightsteel Colossus promo. Viable Magic intro products include:

  • Starter Kits
  • Foundations Beginner Box
  • Foundations Starter Collection
  • Six or more Play Boosters from a set
    • Includes Bundles and Play Booster boxes

Participating LGS may also have Ajani Community Tutor pins on-hand to give out at their discretion.

According to WotC, the dates and times for Magic Academy events are organized on an individual basis for each LGS, so players are encouraged to reach out to their local stores for those details.
