Video: Mono-Green Aggro In Standard

Todd Anderson’s videos are back! This week he works with Mono-Green Aggro in Standard, tweaking the list he used at the Pro Tour. Watch and learn how to play this deck for Grand Prix Baltimore and StarCityGames.com Open: Memphis.

Hi everyone and welcome back to more videos! This week we’ll be working with Dungrove Elder in Standard, bashing people to death with Bellowing Tanglewurm and friends! The updated decklist is featured here:

In general, I think this deck isn’t favored against Wolf Run (which ended up winning the Pro Tour), but I think the deck is still pretty good. You have solid matchups against most things that don’t involve Titans, but even then you can randomly club people with Dungrove Elder and Sword of War and Peace. With the rising popularity of the Drogskol Captain deck, I think that Corrosive Gale should be seeing more and more play. The card can singlehandedly wipe their board, giving you a huge edge when fighting through their Lingering Souls and Dungeon Geists.

Since Wolf Run is going to be fairly popular, I thought that Act of Aggression would be a sweet addition to the sideboard. Stealing their Primeval Titan can pump your Dungrove Elders in the process, usually resulting in a fairly quick kill assuming you’ve done a small amount of damage to them already. However, without Primeval Titans or Wolf Run yourself, it can be difficult to go over the top of them.

Overrun gives you a small edge in the matchups where you need the last few points of damage to kill them. Since you are vulnerable to their sweepers, Overrun might not be the best choice, but Mono-Green doesn’t really have much in the way of answers. Since we already have a Mountain, it might be smart to board a Kessig Wolf Run and a Primeval Titan, but I’m not sold. If you want to do that, then you should probably just be playing a different deck altogether.

As for the singleton Mountain, it helps with Dawntreader Elk to activate your flipped Daybreak Ranger, though I’m still not sure that is a necessity. Without Kessig Wolf Run, it might just make your deck less consistent, which is what we found in our initial testing with the deck. I hope you guys enjoy!
