Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), check out a new mythic rare Phoenix coming in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt — Sunstreak Phoenix!
Sunstreak Phoenix follows in the long history of Phoenixes in Magic as a flying threat that can continuously return to the battlefield. Let’s see what conditions have to be met for this 4/2 to come back.
If it’s neither day nor night, it becomes day as Sunstreak Phoenix enters the battlefield.
Whenever day becomes night or night becomes day, you may pay 1R. If you do, return Sunstreak Phoenix from your graveyard to battlefield tapped.
Sunstreak Phoenix plays along with the day and night themes in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and can set the day/night cycle in motion upon entering the battlefield. Once the day/night cycle is in play, Sunstreak Phoenix can return to the battlefield any time day changes to night or night changes to day for the low cost of 1R.
Sunstreak Phoenix looks to fit in with a Werewolf deck that’s already focused on taking advantage of the changing day and night cycle. Of course, there are plenty of other cards in the set that can prompt day or night so even a light splash of that effect can make this Phoenix much stronger than expected. Even as just a sideboard option, Sunstreak Phoenix can punish an opponent from switching the state of day or night too much.
What do you think of Sunstreak Phoenix? Does it have to played in a deck tailored for it to be powerful or can it make the cut with minimal daybound and nightbound effects?
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is currently scheduled for release on September 24. View our official preview gallery.
