Blake Rasmussen and Steve Sunu didn’t have any breaking news or announcements today on Weekly MTG, but they did sit down with Ben Drago and Bear Waston to discuss what the Magic Esports team is working on during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Drago said that the team is working on handling outstanding invites to the Players Tour and are following through on the commitments to those players. The team plans to have an announcement within a couple weeks breaking down the all the details.
The Esports team also had their first online meetings with pro players this week to be better prepared with the MPL and Rivals as well as making a clearer path for challengers.
Watson discussed the success of the MagicFest Online series and how it has delivered for competitive play, but said the team is still looking forward to having tabletop events as soon as possible.
Watson and Drago hammered home the idea that it is still too early to tell what the Esports landscape will look like two to three years from now, but that they are diligently working on it for the time in between. The hope is to have events this year, but they have to remain adaptable as things change and for how everyone will act when a new normal is reached.
