Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Deathsie, check out a Legendary Artifact Creature from Strixhaven: School of Mages — Codie, Vociferous Codex!
While we still have a lot to learn about Codie in the Strixhaven story, the Construct’s card is here and it’s a doozy.
A three-mana 1/4 that prevents you from playing permanent spells is quite the restriction, but its activated ability rewards you for the sacrifice.
By no longer being able to cast permanent spells, Codie allows you to get a free spell every turn you play a spell after activating its ability. Not only do you net a mana from the ability, but you get all five colors of mana to cast any possible spell. While the ability functions similarly to cascade in that the next spell needs to be of lesser mana value, you get the option to play the spell at any point until the end of your turn.
Codie doesn’t look to have massive implications for Standard or Limited, as your deck has to be loaded with instants and sorceries to get a bonus and the 1/4 sizing on top of being an artifact makes it susceptible to all kinds of removal spells. Codie’s true place to shine will be Commander, where you can build a deck of all spells and lands while always having access to Codie from the Command Zone. On top of that, it’s another five-color commander that requires some restrictive deck building to be powerful.
What do you think of Codie, Vociferous Codex? What are the main spells you want to play and spin into in a game of Commander?
