This past weekend, nearly 585 players gathered for the Theros Beyond Death Standard Grand Prix at MagicFest Lyon.
Grand Prix Lyon was the first Standard Grand Prix of 2020. The Top 8 featured five unique archetypes, but notably missing among them is Temur Adventures, a deck that previously shined in a Azorius Control dominated metagame, but failed to put a copy into the Top 8 after a strong showing by Mono-Red Aggro.
Top 8 Metagame
- 2 Bant Ramp
- 2 Mono Red Aggro
- 2 Rakdos Sacrifice
- 1 Sultai Ramp
- 1 Temur Reclamation
After battling his way through 15 rounds of swiss, Ruocco entered the Top 8 as the fourth seed with 37 match points. Ruocco would go on to win his quarterfinal match 2-1 and semifinal match 2-0, before eventually defeating Quentin Leroy (Temur Reclamation) 2-0 in the finals to become the champion of Grand Prix Lyon.

Despite rising concerns over COVID-19 (Corona Virus), Wizards of the Coast plans to proceed with next weekend’s MagicFest Detroit, which takes place March 13-15 and features a Theros Beyond Death Standard Grand Prix.
