New Events and Big Changes Coming to MTG Arena

MTG Arena State of the Game: December Notes!

Wizards of the Coast has announced a series of substantial updates and additions coming soon to MTG Arena.

Brawlidays

Event Dates: December 12–January 16

Entry Cost: 10,000 Gold or 2,000 Gems

Event Record: None! Play as many games as you like until the event ends.

In an effort to accommodate the large demand for on-demand Brawl events, MTG Arena will feature “Brawlidays” – an event that allows players to pay a one-time entry fee in order to join as many Brawl queues as the player chooses.

The event is Wizard’s “first experiment with a long-term event in a pass style” and are “planning to make some iterations based on player feedback and participation in the event.”

In addition to one-time, unlimited games, the Brawlidays event will reward players with a new, Selesnya Commander – Rhys the Redeemed, which will be awarded after their first win.

Wizards also plans on making more similar events in the future as well that aren’t just limited to the Brawl format.

Historic Changes

In order to monitor the health of Historic, the following cards will be suspended:

  • Oko, Thief of Crowns
  • Field of the Dead
  • Once Upon a Time
  • Veil of Summer

These powerful cards are currently banned in several formats, but rather than remove them completely from Historic, Wizards has opted to be “…more flexible with which cards are suspended and when, compared to more traditional bannings.”

Suspensions are often a temporary measure and will last the length of one Ranked Historic season before being reevaluated.

New Events

Historic

Historic fans can also look forward to a new event: Historic Artisan.

Running from December 20 – 30, the event will cost either 2,500 Gold or 500 Gems to enter, and can be played as much as the player would like.

  • Win 5: Militia Bugler card style
  • Win 4: Curious Obsession card style
  • Win 3: Cast Down card style
  • Win 2: Guttersnipe card style
