Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Adam Styborski, check out another creature in Modern Horizons 2 based off an older card — Magus of the Bridge!
Magus of the Bridge is a callback to the Future Sight card Bridge from Below, which now resides on the Modern banned list due to its power in Hogaak decks in 2019. Unlike Bridge from Below, Magus of the Bridge has relevant text when on the battlefield instead of only caring about being in your graveyard like the original version. Being a three-mana 4/4 is also a good rate to add onto its ability.
Whenever a nontoken creature is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.
When a creature is put into an opponent’s graveyard from the battlefield, exile Magus of the Bridge.
Now to get the effect of Bridge from Below it needs to be on the battlefield, which on top of being a creature, makes it much easier to interact with by opponents. Magus of the Bridge still has the exile clause from Bridge from Below, but it exiles the creature while its on the battlefield instead of being in the graveyard. Being a creature already makes it susceptible to plenty of removal spells, but opponents can simply chump block the Magus or any other creature to exile Magus of the Bridge.
So what do you think of Magus of the Bridge? Can Dredge or similar style of decks utilize this new take on a broken card or will it have to find a home in a new archetype? Let us know what you think in the comments!
