Lukas Honnay won the Insight Esports Historic Open with Jeskai Control on Saturday.
Honnay entered the elimination rounds as the top seed after going 6-1 in the Swiss. He rattled off three more wins in a row to win the 69-person event and take home the $1,250 first-place prize. Honnay defeated three different archetypes in the Top 8, going from Azorius Auras (Lurrus) to Dimir Control to Izzet Phoenix.
Izzet Phoenix has continued its stranglehold on the top of the Historic metagame, accounting for more than 25% of the field Saturday and hitting a 56% win rate. It made up half of the Top 8, followed by Jeskai Control as the only other deck with more than one copy. Azorius Auras (Lurrus) and Jeskai Control were the next two most-played decks coming in at 13% and 10%, respectively.
Dimir Control by Matias Lionel Rodriguez Zarate stood out as an outlier in the format, playing like a classic draw-go control deck. It’s only win conditions were four copies of Shark Typhoon, a Commence the Endgame, and a lone Crawling Barrens.
