Conversations around the companion mechanic have overtaken social media recently, and while many expect one or more companions to be banned by Wizards of the Coast (WotC) at some point, no one expected to see Gyruda, Doom of Depths to be banned so quickly on Magic Online (MTGO) in Legacy.
But the fun didn’t stop there. Gyruda also saw its temporary ban reach Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Vintage as well.
The temporary banning is taking place because of how Gyruda interacts with permanent graveyard exiling effects like Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace.
This temporary ban has had rippling effects across the Magic Online schedule, most notably causing WotC to postpone its most recent Legacy Showcase Qualifier to Sunday, April 26.
MTGO expects to have this problem fixed sometime next week. In the interim, players who had Gyruda in their deck in active leagues have been removed and reimbursed.
