Magic Esports tweeted that 11 double-faced cards will be suspended for MPL and Rivals League players at the upcoming May 15-16 Strixhaven League Weekend due to a bug.
The 10 transforming DFCs from Ixalan block and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager from Core Set 2019 will be suspended for the May Strixhaven League Weekend as the cards are incorrectly counting their mana cost toward devotion when the land or planeswalker side of the cards are on the battlefield.
Almost none of the cards see play in Historic with the exception of Search for Azcanta and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, but the interaction specifically between Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin and Nicol Bolas, the Arisen with Thassa’s Oracle in the Dimir and Grixis Tainted Pact decks is concerning due to the popularity and strength of the decks. Despite not having mana costs on the back sides of these cards, players can get additional blue devotion for Thassa’s Oracle with the transformed cards on the battlefield.
The announcement from Wizards of the Coast (WotC) clarifies that all other DFCs work correctly with devotion and that this suspension for the above cards will not be enforced in-client. The suspensions are only for players in the Strixhaven League weekend and it will not be enforced on ladder or other events on MTG Arena. The MTG Arena team is looking to have the bug addressed before the June 4-6 Strixhaven Championship, but the article doesn’t give an estimated date for the fix.
