Tristan Wylde-LaRue won the Regional Championship at SCG CON Portland with Four-Color Rhythm on Sunday.

Wylde-Larue put his mark on the Standard format with his own take on the Simic Ouroboroid deck, moving it away from the namesake creature and shifting it into a more toolbox-style deck dependent on Nature’s Rhythm. While still sporting all the mana acceleration Badgermole Cub and friends can provide, his build of the deck utilized Brightglass Gearhulk, often getting Meltstrider’s Resolve, and Explosive Prodigy to get an edge in the green mirrors. The sideboard offered more tools to showcase how flexible this archetype can be.

Wylde-Larue made the Top 8 as the No. 2 seed with a record of 12-2-1 in the Swiss. He took down Aedan Simons-Rudolph, on Boros Dragons, in the quarterfinals and beat Devon Straub, on Simic Ouroboroid, in the semis to reach the finals. Mason Buonadonna, playing Simic Ouroboroid, pathed his way to the finals with wins against Pierre Smith, on Bant Airbending, and Evan Vetter, on Jeskai Control.

The finalists locked up their invites to the World Championship, along with a Pro Tour invite that the Top 32 players earned, but had to duke it out for the title of Regional Champion. The pair split the first two games, leading to Wylde-LaRue to be on the play for the final game — the biggest edge one can have in the Badgermole Cub matchup. His explosive start was too much for Buonadonna to keep up with and Wylde-LaRue beat down with a wide board to win the deciding game, leaving Craterhoof Behemoth nowhere to be seen in the clinching game.

With the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed, Standard saw some shifts from cards like Formidable Speaker and the new evoke Elementals. Elemental-based decks were entirely new creations, while many green decks took advantage of Jean-Emmanuel Depraz’s World Championship card. Check out the Day 1 metagame breakdown of the 899 total players below.

Day 2 consisted of 214 players that reached 18 match points on Day 1. See how the archetypes converted below.
