Adam Weiss won the US Regional Championship with Gruul Aggro in Dallas, Texas on Sunday.

Weiss went 12-2 in the Swiss to make the Top 8 of the 1,281-person tournament as the No. 3 seed. With Standard containing 13 sets, making it one of the deepest Standard formats of all time, almost every deck archetype was viable. Weiss opted for an under-the-radar option of Gruul Aggro, an incredibly low-to-the-ground deck with prowess creatures and combat tricks.

Weiss was too explosive for many of the format’s staple decks like Azorius Control, Temur Analyst, Five-Color Legends, and Esper Midrange to handle while being able to race the opposing aggressive decks like Boros Convoke, Bant Toxic, and Mono-Red Aggro. Weiss was the only player in the Top 16 on the deck that gained multiple tools from Outlaws of Thunder Junction: Slickshot Show-Off, Demonic Ruckus, and the reprint of Snakeskin Veil.

The Top 8 consisted of three copies of Boros Convoke, two copies of Azorius Control, and single copies of Five-Color Legends, Gruul Ramp, and Weiss’ Gruul Aggro. Weiss advanced through the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Charles Eiler on Azorius Control. After that, he faced Boros Convoke in the final two matches, where the player that went first won every game, leading to Weiss winning each match 2-1. He closed the tournament with a blistering fourth-turn win, flooding the battlefield with cheap creatures and a flurry of one-mana spells to blank Chris Barone’s blockers and removal spells.

Weiss won $30,000 for first place, while Barone took home $15,000. Both finalists earned invites to the World Championship while all players in the Top 64 earned qualifications for Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 in Amsterdam.
