Roy, Mono-Red Aggro, Wins Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation

Despite Izzet Cauldron dominating the headlines, Brennan Roy showed Mono-Red Aggro was the most dangerous deck on the weekend

Brennan Roy won Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation at SCG CON Orlando with Mono-Red Aggro on Sunday.

On a weekend where Izzet Cauldron made up 30 percent of the Day 1 field, 54 percent of Day 2, and 75 percent of the Top 8, Roy showed that Mono-Red Aggro was the savior the whole time. Roy’s build of the deck went 11-2 against the menace of the format and 5-0 against the remainder (2-0 against the mirror, 2-0 against Temur Battlecrier Combo, and 1-0 against Azorius Control).

Roy finished Day 1 at 8-1 then went 5-1 on Day 2 to make the Top 8 as the No. 1 seed — right where he wanted to be with the most aggressive deck in the format. Razorkin Needlehead was the MVP for Roy, providing a relevant body and a huge source of damage against Izzet Cauldron if unanswered.

Roy dispatched Marco Cammilluzzi in the Mono-Red Aggro mirror in the quarterfinals, setting up matches against Izzet Cauldron the rest of the way as every other player in the bracket was on the most-played deck in Standard. Roy beat Josh Moscoe, fresh off qualifying for the next Arena Championship and punching his ticket for his first Pro Tour, in two quick games, leaving just Jack Potter between him and the trophy.

Roy followed the same recipe from the semis in the finals, blowing up all of Potter’s creatures to clear the way for his early threats, leaving troublesome bodies like Screaming Nemesis and Razorkin Needlehead to finish the match 2-0. Roy earned $10,000, Standard for a year (a case of Play Boosters for every Standard release in 2026), a Pro Tour invite, and a sparkling trophy for his efforts.
