Netflix Announces Magic: The Gathering Animated Series Is In Production

Series has new showrunner and executive producer

The Netflix Magic: The Gathering animated series is not dead after all.

Netflix announced the MTG animated series is now in production, despite reports last week from the voice actor previously cast as Gideon Jura stating it was “not happening.” An article from Netflix’s Tudum website published yesterday during Geeked Week 2024 said the series has a new showrunner and executive producer with a new creative direction.

Terry Matalas, known for writing for shows like 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and the MacGyver reboot, will be at the helm. Matalas is already the third different executive producer for the show, following Joe and Anthony Russo, who left the project in 2021, and Jeff Kline. Oscar winner Patrick Osborne is the new supervising director and executive producer.

With the show heading in a new creative direction, it is unclear if the animated series will still revolve around Gideon and Chandra, like the previous iterations of the show. Brandon Routh and Lexi DiBenedetto had been cast as the two planeswalkers, but yesterday’s announcement doesn’t mention characters or actors. With Routh’s comment about the show not happening, it’s possible this version of the series will focus on different characters entirely.

The first glimpse of the show is just a promotional shot showing what looks to be Ajani Goldmane (matching the leonin build and sporting his signature double-headed axe) and another character, potentially Chandra, Nahiri, or Jhoira. While there is no release date or time table, this looks to be a positive step forward for the show that was originally announced in 2019.
