The seventh installment of Magic: The Gathering’s Murders at Karlov Manor story picks up with Kaya and Kellan back at the Agency. As the pair goes over their notes from the investigation, an alarm blares throughout the building, signifying that someone has attempted to break into the evidence locker. Kaya and Kellan race to the scene to find the area covered in dust and debris. A bellowing roar erupts from the dust cloud, and the Gruul god, Anzrag, emerges.
Previously contained within an evidence capsule, the now enraged giant mole lashes out, crushing everything, including members of the Agency, underfoot. Kaya and Kellan quickly go on the offensive, but even with their powerful Magic, they’re barely able to get the attention of the great beast. Roused by the commotion, Ezrim arrives on the scene and distracts Anzrag long enough for Kaya to locate the his evidence capsule. Utilizing her ability to go ethereal, Kaya rushes the beast and gets close enough to seal it away in the capsule once again. With Anzrag contained, Ezrim tasks his agents with going to the Gruul to question them about potential involvement, since no one knows how the god could have escaped.
As Kaya and Kellan recover from the shock of battle, the ghost of Boros detective Agrus Kos approaches. Kos voices to Kaya that he’s felt uneasy about the case, and wants her permission to investigate something that is “too dangerous for a living person” – going to see Rakdos. She agrees, and Kos leaves for Cult territory. Utilizing his ghostly form, Kos makes his way through undercity and down to the inner sanctum where Rakdos himself is held. After the long descent, Kos finds the great demon asleep, a layer of dust covering his body – signifying that he hasn’t been active in quite some time and likely isn’t responsible for the murders.
As Kos prepares to leave, a mysterious smoke envelopes his ghostly body, and binds him before he vanishes in a flash of red light. Judith then emerges from the shadows holding a red skull – the small figure of Kos contained within. The scene ends with Judith remarking “Can’t have you spoiling all my fun when I’m so close to getting what I really want.” “Our guild needs new leadership, a … dramatic change of scene. All I need to do is throw enough clues in front of those amateur crime-chasers, and this ends with me at center stage. You’re not a part of my script, little spirit. You’ll stay where I put you.”
Picking up with Proft and Etrata, the pair descends into the undercity, venturing into Golgari territory. They make their way through winding underground tunnels until they find an old decrepit door. Upon entering, they meet another of Proft’s acquaintances – Izoni. After exchanging pleasantries, Proft asks Izoni to help identify the substance found back at Etrata’s residence. Izoni, an Elf who is immune to all types of poisons and toxins, opens the vial, examines the contents, and comes to the conclusion that while organic in nature, it’s not something that is native to Ravnica.
Before Proft and Etrata can further discuss the matter, Proft catches sight of a cloaked figure in the shadows and gives chase. Just as he made up the ground between them, Proft is suddenly knocked unconscious. Upon waking, Proft finds himself inside a dream where he is met by the mysterious stranger. The “dream” turns out to be a place inside Proft’s mind, and the stranger is rummaging through his thought files. The two have a brief conversation, where the man explains that he is “just passing through” Ravnnica, and that he is not the killer they’ve been searching for.
Suddenly, Proft is roused from his dream and finds himself sitting next to Etrata and no sign of the stranger. Despite being left with a nasty bruise, the encounter leaves Proft with a brainstorm, and he quickly ushers Etrata off toward the surface to meet with Kaya.
Once above ground, Etrata and Proft send word to Kaya to meet them at the Karlov Manor. The trio shares information on their recent experiences, and Kaya describes the attack her and Kellan experience in the alleyway in addition to what Judith told them about the Guildpact. Without hesitating, Proft states that he now knows who is responsible, and starts off.
“I know who’s responsible for this,” said Proft. “All of this. And I can prove it. But I need you to keep Etrata’s whereabouts to yourself, and to arrange a little gathering for me before I can explain …”
