MTG Head Designer Shares Hints For Outlaws Of Thunder Junction

Hints for upcoming cards, mechanics, and more from MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction revealed

Following preview season tradition, Magic: The Gathering Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, has shared his teaser for the upcoming set, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, to his Blogatog.

Starting things off, Rosewater provides a few hints of unique themes we’ll find within the set, including:

  • A card capable of returning three different card types from the graveyard to the battlefield
  • Dual lands with a land subtype that has never been on dual lands before
  • A new modal mechanic that introduces something different to think about
  • A card that can swap/exchange control of up to three different card types

From these hints, we now know that modal cards will be returning, but enemy-colored fast land reprints will not. Additional hints confirm a new cycle of “five related creature types”, a creature token with an ability that has never been included on a token before, and a new typal card that benefits Skeletons and Zombies.

Next up, we take a look at a few creature types and rules text that will be included in the set. Among the most interesting types, we find Shark Rogue, Plant Bard, Ox Angel, Porcupine Mount, and Homarid Mercenary. For rules text, some line up with the aforementioned creature types, such as “Oxen you control have double strike”, while others such as “That card gains flashback {0}” and “Plotting cards from your hand costs {2} less” showcase a few mechanics included in the set.

Lastly, Rosewater revealed the names of several cards from the set:

  • Claim Jumper
  • Form a Posse
  • Gold Rush
  • Great Train Heist
  • High Noon
  • Quick Draw
  • Reach for the Sky
  • Resilient Roadrunner
  • Shoot the Sheriff
  • This Town Ain’t Big Enough
