The workers for the Magic: The Gathering Arena team have officially formed a union after winning the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election 79-16 on Tuesday.
The employees, who have named themselves the United Wizards of the Coast, officially joined the Communications Workers of America (CWA) after starting the process of forming a union back in April.
According to the NLRB case file, 100 of the 102 eligible voters participated and the vote for joining the union easily surpassed the 50 percent + 1 vote threshold with 79 of the 100 voting yes. There were 16 no votes and five challenged ballots, which refer to an individual whose eligibility to vote is in dispute.
This is a huge step forward for members of the MTG Arena team, but there is plenty of work still to be done. Wizards of the Coast (WotC) will now have to bargain in good faith with the members of UWOTC-CWA over working conditions, which can take a long time in the case of a first contract that establishes rules for wages, hours, benefits, and more.
