MTG Arena State of The Game For July Announces Upcoming Explorer And Historic Anthologies

Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has released their weekly MTG Arena updates, along with the State of the Game for July.

Explorer and Historic Anthologies

Later this summer, a 20-card expansion for Explorer and a 20-card expansion for Historic will land on MTG Arena. This will be the first dedicated expansion for Explorer and will include a range of cards from “iconic powerhouses to offbeat favorites” from Pioneer. The second expansion will be Historic Anthology 6 and “will bring new possibilities” to the format.

Renewal and Rotation

Magic’s Standard rotation will occur with the release of Dominaria United later this fall. Here are the new features you can expect to find along with it:

  • Updated New Player Decks: Decks featuring non-rotating cards from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and forward.
  • New Jump In! Packets: “Packets using themes from the rotating sets will be retired, while remaining packets will be revised to contain only cards that won’t be rotating out. This is in addition to the usual addition of new packets that will feature content from Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate.”
  • Updated Individual Card Rewards (ICRs): “Players will now only receive ICRs from sets that will still be legal in Standard and Alchemy after rotation (i.e., Innistrad: Midnight Hunt forward).”
  • Quick Draft: For the time being, Quick Draft events will only be made up of sets from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt forward.

Dragon Brawl Event

Dragon Brawl will run from July 14-18, allowing players to use preconstructed decks featuring legendary Dragon commanders and play to earn 10 rulebook-style card frames.

Dungeons & Dragons Event

Play in the Dungeons & Dragons all-access event from July 18-28 and earn rulebook-style card frames.

Alchemy Metagame Challenge

From July 8-11, players can join Alchemy Metagame Challenge queues. You can play Best-of-Three matches to earn earn gold and Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate packs for wins.

  • July 8–11: Alchemy Metagame Challenge
  • July 14–18: Dragon Brawl
  • July 15–18: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate Constructed
  • July 18–28: Dragons & Dungeons

Quick Draft

  • July 8–22: Innistrad: Crimson Vow
  • July 22–August 5: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate
  • August 5–19: Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
  • August 19–September 2: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate

Midweek Magic

Midweek Magic events open on Tuesdays at 8 AM PT and close on Thursdays at 8 AM PT.

  • July 12–14: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate Bot Phantom Draft (cards aren’t added to your collection)
  • July 19–21: Historic Pauper
  • July 26–28: Singleton
  • August 2–4: Explorer

Arena Open

Arena Open Day 1 entry window opens at 6 AM PT (13:00 UTC) and closes the following day at 3 AM PT (10:00 UTC).

Day 2 entry window is two hours only, from 6 AM PT (13:00 UTC) until 8 AM PT (15:00 UTC).

  • July 30–31
    • Day 1, July 30: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate Sealed
      Best-of-One and Best-of-Three
    • Day 2, July 31: Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate Draft
      Best-of-Three only

Qualifier Weekend events are two-day events in which eligible players compete for invitations to the Arena Championship held in the fourth quarter of 2022.
