Magic: The Gathering Finishes 2022 As One Of Hasbro’s Top Performing Brands

MTG continues to grow as Hasbro’s other brands struggle

Hasbro, parent company of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), has released their Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Financial Report.

According to Hasbro CEO, Chris Cocks, both the fourth quarter and full 2022 year fell “below our expectations”. Hasbro’s fourth quarter revenues fell by 17% year-over-year a “decline of 14% on a constant currency basis” and full year revenues declined “9% year-over-year, a decline of 6% on a constant currency basis”

Despite the overall decline, Magic: The Gathering and Hasbro’s Digital Gaming branch continue to be one of few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing portfolio. In 2022, Magic exceeded $1 billion in revenue for the first time, with each set released through the first three quarters surpassing $100 million in revenue. 2022’s fourth quarter tentpole set – The Brothers War – is also “on track” to pass $100 million in 2023.

Beyond Magic’s major set releases, the Warhammer 40K Universes Beyond Commander decks overperformed drastically, having to be “…reprinted three times to meet robust player demand”. Despite being released in January, initial shipments of Dominaria Remastered in 2022 also helped contribute to Magic’s fourth quarter success.
