Another month of Magic: The Gathering Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs) are in the books! Congratulations to all competitors who earned their United States Regional Championship qualification during the month of May.

To close out the month, we’re showcasing three local game stores that hosted RCQs in May and their winning decklists!

Owl Central Games

Based out of Millersville, Pennsylvania, Owl Central Games hosted a 37-player RCQ on May 18 that culminated in a win for one of the Pioneer format’s classic aggressive decks. Congratulations to Gary Tam for the big win with Izzet Ensoul!

In the finals, Tam faced off against Amalia Combo in the hands of Ryan Potter. In the end, the speed and disruption of Izzet Ensoul proved to be too strong for the Abzan combo deck, but both players walked away from the event having punched their ticket to the Regional Championship in October.

Izzet Ensoul winning the event in a 37 player field might be enough for our local and regional players to reconsider their strategy for the season. And as much as we love seeing our regulars win our tournaments and earn their qualifications, it’s also a welcome challenge when someone not entrenched in our community swoops in to claim the top spot. Shout out to Gary Tam for taking it down!”

Bosco’s Comics Cards & Games

Moving all the way across the country, Bosco’s Comics Cards & Games is a local game store that has been serving Anchorage, Alaska for 40 years! Bosco’s hosted an 11-player RCQ on May 26 that was won by Austin Brazelle, piloting Mono-Red Prowess (Jegantha).

With the win, Brazelle secures a spot in the Regional Championships this October.

3 of the 11 players were relatively new to the format and said they had a great time playing it. We saw a wide range of deck builds that made for some tense matchups.”

Zenergy Gamers

Closing things out, we have Zenergy Gamers, a local game store in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Their 20-player event took place on May 25 and was won by Gruul Prowess (Jegantha) in the hands of Enrique Giovanny Arqueros.

In the finals, Arqueros bested Quintorious Combo 2-1 to secure the victory and a spot in the Regional Championships.

Some out-of-towners joined us and overall it was a smooth operation. Every player brought their A Game!”
