Hasbro Narrows Director Search For Upcoming Live-Action Magic: The Gathering Film

‘BlackBerry’ Director being considered for Magic: The Gathering live-action movie

Earlier this year, Hasbro announced a partnership with Legendary Entertainment to produce a live-action Magic: The Gathering film and television series, and now, an early front-runner for the film’s Director role has allegedly emerged.

While an official statement from either studio has yet to surface, multiple sources including Deadline (one of the media outlets that directly announced the Hasbro-Legendary partnership) have reported that Canadian actor and filmmaker, Matt Johnson, is the top prospect for directing the Magic: The Gathering live-action film.

Although he’s best known for directing the critically acclaimed docudrama BlackBerry (2023), a look at Johnson’s portfolio reveals he has also written and starred in numerous, highly-rated indie film and television projects, including the upcoming Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (2025), a comedy series featuring Johnson as the writer, director, and acting lead. All of these qualifications considered, it’s easy to see why Hasbro and Legendary would be willing to invest in his recruitment.

Despite the media frenzy surrounding these rumors, neither Hasbro or Legendary have commented on Johnson’s involvement, nor have they provided any updates on the project’s progress in the two months following the initial partnership announcement.
