Earlier this week, Magic: The Gathering unveiled a massive Secret Lair collaboration with MSCHF — The Zeta Set.
What is The Zeta Set?
The Zeta Set is a unique Secret Lair set comprised of 121 new-art reprints, designed with inspiration from Magic’s Gamma Playtest cards from 1992.
Each card in the set has been designed and illustrated by MSCHF (pronounced “mischief”) – an artist collective based out of Brooklyn, New York, known for unconventional (and sometimes controversial) artistic offerings – and, according to the designer’s interview with Polygon, draws stylistic inspiration from “…public-domain images, archival material, original MSCHF photography, and typography reminiscent of an early word processor.”
The First Secret Lair Booster Packs
The Zeta Set will be the first Secret Lair offering to be sold as individual, randomized packs. Each pack will contain three commons, two uncommons, one rare or mythic rare, and one random card of any rarity. Individual packs will cost $19.92 (an additional homage to Magic’s 1992 playtesting stage) and will be sold through the Secret Lair Chaos Vault.
Where Can I Use Cards From This set?
Since all cards from The Zeta Set are reprints, they will be playable only in formats where they are already legal. For example, the Zeta Set printing of Sol Ring will still only be legal in Commander and Vintage. It’s also important to note that while some cards from The Zeta Set have shifted rarities, this printing change will not impact a card’s format eligibility. For instance, Baleful Strix appears at common rarity in The Zeta Set, but will not be eligible for play in Magic’s Pauper format.
