Everything You Need To Know About Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man

Next month, Spider-Man will become the first Marvel superhero to swing into a Standard Magic: The Gathering set.

The first of three upcoming Universes Beyond crossover sets between Magic and Marvel, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man brings over 60 years of iconic characters and comic book history to the game.

Set Symbols And Legality

All cards featuring the main set symbol for the Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man (pictured top left above) will be legal for play in Magic’s Standard format. Any cards with the spider symbol (top right above) or Marvel logo symbol will only be legal for play in Eternal formats.

The Infinity Stones Come To Magic

With three Marvel sets coming to Magic and six total Infinity Stones, it’s likely we’ll see two Stones per set. The Soul Stone was the first to be revealed and will be available in three stunning variants.

The First Look

WotC and Marvel joined forces at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con for the debut of Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man. The first-look panel gave insight into the set’s design and also showcased plenty of iconic heroes and villains in their Magic re-imaginings.

Experience Spider-Man At SCG CON Baltimore

October 24–26, SCG CON swings in to Baltimore, MA for Magic Spotlight: Spider-Man! This open event lets anyone play high-level Magic with no pre-qualification required! This two-day event allows players the opportunity to compete for unique and awesome loot, including cash prizes, exclusive promo cards, and invitations to the Pro Tour. Each event also features tons of exciting attractions outside the main event, including vendors, side events, special guests, and more!

All Magic Spotlight: Spider-Man participants will receive a non-foil Spectacular Spider-Man promo card with artwork by Julian Totino Tedesco. Additionally, the Top 128 players will receive traditional foil copies of this promo card. The Top 8 players in each main event will also receive invitations to Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed!

Announcing Magic Spotlight: Spider-Man

Designed with Limited in Mind

Announced alongside the set’s first previews was a new Limited format — Pick Two Draft. According to Wizards of the Coast (WotC), Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man was specifically designed to accommodate this faster Draft format where only four players are needed and two cards are drafted each pack. Magic’s Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, also added that this design was the reason the set has fewer cards overall compared to Magic’s normal releases.

Tabletop Exclusivity

Back in April, WotC announced that some upcoming Universes Beyond releases would require a reskin in order to be included on Magic’s digital platforms. These sets, dubbed Through the Omenpaths, will be mechanically identical to the physical set releases but feature new, Magic artwork.

This is important because Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the first Universes Beyond set to receive this treatment, meaning Spidey and his friends will only be depicted on the physical cards. You can read more on Through the Omenpaths here.
