Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate contains 361 cards, as well as four key mechanics to experience.
Backgrounds
Background cards “represent the story that brought your commander to the point where we find them now” and give your commander “a bonus that will help them (and therefore help you) in the game.”
Certain cards have the new ability “Choose a Background” — a “very specific version of the partner ability, which can allow a player to have more than one commander. If the legendary creature you’ve chosen as your commander has chosen a Background, you may start the game with both that creature and a legendary Background enchantment in the command zone. If you do, that Background functions as a second commander for your deck. “
Initiative
Initiative is a “designation that a player can have during the game (similar to the monarch from some other sets).” There are three ways to take initiative:
- Casting cards like White Plume Adventurer.
- Attacking the player who currently has initiative.
- If the player who currently has initiative leaves the game.
The advantage to having the initiative is getting to venture into Undercity, and you continue through the dungeon during each of your upkeeps as long as you maintain the initiative. Several cards in the set also get stronger as you maintain the initiative.
Myriad
Myriad makes its return in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate. It allows you to attack a player, then for each other opponent, you may create a token that attacks that player or a planeswalker they control. Since Myriad is a may ability, it provides a great opportunity to play the political game as well.
Adventures
The popular mechanic from Throne of Eldraine returns and for the first time, a “noncreature permanent has an Adventure printed on it.”
Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate is scheduled to release on June 10. View our official preview gallery.
