PRJ won his first match at a PTQ when his opponent in the 0-3 bracket didn't show. His more recent results are better, but he is best known for amazing 43 card combos and strange deck designs.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #266 – Grand Prix: Chicago

Thursday, March 12th – I spent the weekend in Chicago, at the largest North American Grand Prix ever. I got to watch a lot of Magic, answer a bunch of questions, and have a great time. Here are some highlights.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #265 – The Impact of the New Core Set on Constructed

Thursday, March 5th – Last week, I looked at the changes in core sets on a broad level. Today, I want to crunch some numbers with Constructed in mind. Let’s see whether the new core set and rotation policies help or hurt Constructed.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #264 – Core Sets!

Thursday, February 26th – MTGO had a rocky week last week, and Wizards offered Nix Tix 10th Edition drafts to make up for it. Could that get me to draft a core set? Yup. Then, after a weekend of thinking about the core set more, I saw Aaron Forsythe’s article on changes to core sets. That has a lot of implications – let’s look at some.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #263 – Rotation of Old Sets on MTGO

Thursday, February 19th – Online, main Magic expansions sets are released a couple of weeks after the prerelease, and stay on sale in the store until the next plus one main set goes on sale. The old-but-new-to-online sets in MTGO, like Mirage and Tempest, don’t have any such schedule. They should – here’s my recommendation.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #262 – Flogging a Dead Horse: Casual Play on MTGO

Thursday, February 12th – What’s wrong with this picture? Player A – tap, tap, tap, play white bordered Venerable Monk. Opponent – sacrifice foil Polluted Delta for foil Underground Sea, play foil Cryptic Command. It’s not just that someone had brought boxing gloves to a gunfight – it is that both combatants thought they were in the right battle with the right weapon. They were battling in the casual play / casual decks room in MTGO.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #261 – Conflux Prerelease

Wednesday, February 4th – On Thornling: Patrick Chapin mentioned that indestructibility in a format with this many remove-from-the-game effects is not what it once was. In this environment, indestructibility is only slightly better than regeneration. Obviously, this card would have been a lot better with Shroud or even protection form color X on command – but those are “not in flavor for Green.”

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #260 – A Martyr to My Deck

Wednesday, January 28th – I actually got to play in an Extended PTQ last weekend. Not judging, not working – playing. Sweet. My record – not quite so sweet. I had the choice of the best deck in the format, the best deck I had played, and the deck I knew best. I played the latter – and I’ll talk about the deck, its evolution and how to win the impossible mirror.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #259 – Grand Prix: Los Angeles

Friday, January 23rd – I appreciated LA weather – or at least not being in the Madison weather – a bit more than usual. Thursday night in LA, we were eating outside in shirtsleeves, while Madison was somewhere around -20 degrees. In LA, I was walking on green grass. Well, in Madison, I could do that, too. Very faded grass – and only if I first scrapped off a couple feet of snow – but we have green grass down there somewhere.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #258 – Playing My Gauntlet

Thursday, January 15th – I’m heading to Grand Prix: LA this week – and I am busy building my test gauntlet. It may be a bit different than yours. I’m going as a judge, and my decks are being built for a very different format. Still – decks are decks, so I’ll try playing them. As Ted Knutson once said – “anyone can win on Magic Online.” Let’s see.

Thursday, January 8th – I was staying with my in-laws in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula over the New Year’s weekend. That’s snow country, and it snowed. Officially, we got 20” between Friday evening and Sunday noon. Other than some cross country skiing, curling up in front of the fire and eating, I played Magic online. My goal was to play as much Magic, in as many different formats, as possible.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #256 – The Year in Review

Thursday, January 1st – By the time you read this, it will be next year. Time to look back at the year that was. A lot has happened since we were drafting triple Lorwyn…

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #255 – MTGO Constructed Formats and Inbreeding

Read Peter Jahn... at StarCityGames.com!
Thursday, December 25th – I play (and follow) five Constructed formats on MTGO: Standard, Extended, Classic, Singleton, and Pauper. I have been toying with the idea of paying to play – in other words, entering tournaments in the formats. That got me wondering whether my decks were competitive, and whether – even if my deck was competitive – whether I could play with the masters of these formats. Are there really Masters of the formats? Time to do some digging.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #254 – Spending Worlds Weekend Online

Read Peter Jahn... at StarCityGames.com!
Thursday. December 18th – Last weekend was Worlds. Unfortunately, I got to experience it the way most of the rest of us did – remotely. On the plus side, I played a bunch of Magic Online and watched the coverage. It was a nice snowy weekend, with dogs, a fire in the fireplace, and online release events. It almost made up for not being there.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #253 – The Inherent Unfairness of Promo Cards

Read Peter Jahn... at StarCityGames.com!
Thursday, December 11th – Two semi-related events happened this last week. First, a European behavioral scientist performed a very clever experiment to show that dogs feel jealousy at unfair treatment. The second was some more information on the Magic Online rewards cards, and the fact that Wizards will be giving some away at Worlds. That made the MTGO forum folks bay like a pack of hounds in full cry.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #252 – Nix Tix Drafting

Read Peter Jahn... at StarCityGames.com!
Thursday, December 4th – Last weekend MTGO offered “free” drafts – meaning you only needed to supply the packs and you could draft. I did a few drafts. I also decided to write about a draft – to look at one in a bit more depth. The question was – which draft, and why? I decided to look for one where I had lost “to mana screw” or something like that, and analyze that in more depth.
